Just a mere $609, there were cheaper ones, and dearer ones (ranged from $309-$909), but I liked this early one with the single rear brake/tail light etc and it's pretty much ready for rego just need to change the plug on the wiring. Cheaper ones didn't all have the tarp either, or the paint was beaten up with rust showing through.

Very easy to flip over and work on! You may want to dampen down the springs, can be quite bouncy when empty.

Got it, need to drop a spring to get it level and soften it up but it tows really well and the pintle made no noise behind the JK, did on Chris's Commander though.

I borrowed the pintle hook as they are not cheap. I'm swapping the ring on the trailer over to a mchitch as soon as I have the blueslip done. See my JK build thread for a pic of how I'm going to do it.

Went to blueslip it today, it got knocked back on a few things but the main one was the lunette (ring) does not have a load rating on it and is not adr stamped. Luckily me nw hitch turns up tomorrow and they blueslip guy was happy with my proposed modification to fit the new hitch. Just bear that in mind as unless you plan to change the hitch you may have troubles at blueslip time. I could of gone somewhere else but I want to change it anyway.

Also needed mudflaps, reflectors and the lights changed as the taillight bucket blocks the indicator when on the left side.

Got a piece of 16MM flat bar bent and cut to size in the end. I think it might be overkill but it should do the job :) Have set it up to lower the hitch a bit as well to level it out some more. I was thinking of puting some side braces on it but I don't think this'll bend as it is, probably still brace it anyway :)

Should be more than strong enough, however remember the corrugations up the Cape. They can snap anything......

A ply template, some careful drilling and it all lines up :) Trailer sits level, rear door and tyre clears everything, can't ask for more. Tomorrow some welding of the side braces and the hitch is done.

Went to the smallish caravan and camping show last week and they had a stand with offroad utility trailers. They have metal framing and tough plastic bodies with covers. The fellow will be contacting the club to arrange a show and talk about their products.

If they are pod trailers they are pretty cool, out of my price range though, start at around 12k for the extreme offroad or 5.5k for the all roada (which is pretty much identical to my trailer in size and weight just not as deep but has a hard top).

Finished the hitch mount other than giving the square corners a trim to round. Was recovering from a late night and early morning run so packed up earlier than planned.

Found some paint in Army Green in spray packs. Tested it on a few chips, match is pretty good with the bottom of the pic sprayed from the can and the top as it already was. Should do fine for the drawbar freshen up and painting the new hitch setup.

Passed the blue slip no problems, ARN number is now the stamped in chassis number and is being registered as a 1965 model, now just need the RMS to get their system back up so I can get a plate for it....

Tows really well with the McHitch, no noise other than the old rattle from an empty trailer having a bit of a bounce but don't even feel it's there. I'm really happy with the state it is in now and got to finally check it on a level road to sit if it sits level... Looks like my measurements were pretty good.

Decided to hold off on the battery since I won't need it until Christmas. Will be getting a new canvas cover though so it is 100% water proof :)

Added chains to the mudflaps today, always been on the todo list but one of the muddies ate one today so thought I better get it done.

Turns out the manufacturer that makes the covers for the Army has had to find a new market, now they sell them to the public :) Grabbed a new cover, made from Australian canvas, and ordered a jockey wheel as well.

Decided to add a jockey wheel but wanted a removable one as I don't need it most of the time, also offroad I can put it in the tub where it won't get damaged.

Welded a pipe mount on.

Pull the pin to flip it up, put the pin back in, then wind it out to lock it against the chassis/tub so it won't rattle.

Started doing the wiring to connect it up to the dual battery setup in the Jeep, still want to use it as a box trailer so trying to keep it out the way and discreet from the outside. The plug attaches to the inside of the tub where the ribs are, see the post above, so you can't see any screws from the outside.

So I was going to put a DC-DC charger between the auxiliary battery in the back of the Jeep and the 105AH in the trailer, as after hooking it up I was loosing 1.3v at the trailer battery connection. Then I realised the Anderson plug to battery clamps that I grabbed from my solar panel bag were really only meant to handle 10A and were way to small so it wasn't a good test.

I made a proper cable to go from internal trailer plug to battery and now I get 13.8V at the trailer battery when there is 13.9V at the Aux battery in the Jeep. So no need for a DC-DC charger in between as this is really only to keep the battery fully charged while on the road to camp as solar will be plugged in when I set up and the battery will be fully charged when I leave home. That's a few hundred saved.

Next to put all the plugs and things on the battery box so it is self contained.

Ended up deciding to buy a battery box and ill addd extra sockets to it etc. Already put a 50A circuit breaker on the posts on the box as there was nothing. I added a CTEK comfort indicator flush mount panel as well, lets me plug my CTEK charger in without having to connect with alligator clips, much neater. Next I'll added a couple of Anderson plugs a USB charging plug and one or two merit plug sockets so all bases are covered.

Got the battery box done and tested the solar. To do this I put my Ammeter in line with the solar and battery, since the battery was pretty much fully charged it only put 4.1A/H into the battery for the first minute or two and then dropped to maintenance mode where the regulator cycled from 0A/H to around 3.5A/H.

Anyway, happy with the setup now but will probably grab another fold out solar panel to go to a total of 240W which in full sun will push around 13A/H into the battery, that's enough to take it from flat (50% charge) to full in under 4 hours or a touch over 4 hours if the fridge is in use at the same time. Since Winter gives 5 to 6 hours of good sun (if it's sunny) 4 hours is a safe number.

Ammeter in line with solar, now fitted an isolator switch as well, it isolates everything but the CTEK charging port.

80w of solar doing a fine job, it's previously run my fridge for 3 days and kept the 66AH of battery in the Jeep fully charged with no problems.

Testing out the full solar farm ;) (except for the 40w on the roof of the Jeep). All well and good having solar that will keep up on a sunny day but what about when it's overcast, or like today, raining. Well I got both panels out (total of 240W) and tried them out.

1.02A/H not bad and enough of a charge to give it a few extra days of running time, should stretch it out to 5 days running a fridge.

Made a simple power box that can connect to the trailer via my anderson plug extension lead, should easily be able to get 20A down to the box. Anyway, now I can charge the phone in the tent and run the lights off the 105AH battery in the trailer.
