What are club members using for mapping At the moment.

So what App is popular with in the club?

I use the Hema app on Android, most apps support GPX files now or you can use GPSBabel to convert most formats :)

Memory Map app on Android. It came with some free topo maps but I also purchased one big bundle of Hema 4wd maps that I now mostly use with this app.

I have them to but Hema downloads maps as needed and they are up to date :)

We have experimented with Hema, Mudmaps and GPx. Mudmaps and Gpx both offer things that Hema doesn't and there are annoying quirks with Hema. My biggest annoyance is I cant read the track names, so I expand the map to get closer to be able to read, the closer you get and it progressively makes the names smaller so you can NEVER have a static map that you can read names. Anooying.

Still, we have pretty much settled on Hema and use it for everything. Might not be the best at everything, but its probably the best "jack of all trades".

Stupid question but do you run these off a tablet or phone? I've been thinking of downloading something on to my phone but didn't want to waste the cash if it was only worth it on tablet.

This app looks pretty cool as well, I think I'll give it a go, it uses the all familiar topo maps as well as a bunch of other resources so many map layers to choose from.

I run from a tablet mounted to my dash, I think a phone is too small, the 7" tablet works well though.

Steve, thats interesting. Mate could you pull up a pic actually on the trails? I can read your pic no probs, is it that legible off bitumen?

No different on the trails, at Coffs I was using it to guide our split up group back to our location and reading out the trail names to them so they knew where we were in relation to them. I'll grab a pic tomorrow showing it though. Is yours Apple or Android?

Hema Explorer on iOS is what I use. Has some nice stuff in there like POI search and rain radar overlays. Allows you to navigate to a waypoint using choice of Google or Apple Maps too.

Only complaint is that the topo maps aren't very high resolution, down low it reverts to Internet maps.

I'm really liking the Android app Australia topo. Maps are great with lots of sources, good zoom detail and rotate to heading up when driving. Here's 3 levels of detail from the upcoming swing bridge trip.

I use MotionX GPS HD and think it is great.
It loads quickly with 3G reception, and you can also download maps of any area (worldwide) of street maps or topographical, with a range of resolutions (obviously higher resolution takes longer to download & takes more room). The downloads are slow (I usually set them up and run them when not using the device). Works on iPhone & iPad, not sure about android. You can track and save trips (I now have about 100 saved). You can also create groups and see others on the trip (with 3G coverage).
All for about $5. Well worth trying it.
You can also view the trip with satellite images (or hybrid satellite and road names), but can't download these maps. Choice of Bing, Apple or Google maps.

Memory-maps on android and PC. With full 1:25000 for NSW.

After trailing a number of different apps this was the clearer winner

Good waypoint, route, track support. Great sync via cloud with PC and other devices.

Works well on phone, but now running on dedicated 8" tablet when I am out and about.

Brian will run it on his phone and on an extended trip izzy will often run it on her iPad as well - she looks out for campsites and helicoptor landing zones (which took a long time for her understand that the H did not stand for hut!

Greg emails me tracks as well :) They import into Hema and Australia Topo, I've now switched to Australia topo (from Hema) on Android because of all the available maps and details, the Open Cycling maps in it have so many tracks, most named as well :) Even has the bypasses.... Once I drag around the screen in caches them for offline use if there is no online signal on the trails.
