View Full Version : Prospecive Members Trip Sunday 15th November 2015 Zig Zag-Lithgow
ZIG ZAG Sunday 15th November 2015
When: Sunday 15th November 2015
Location: Zig Zag- Lithgow
Hi Guys,
As discussed with Heidi we are going to put on a prospective members trip to ZIG ZAG area Lithgow on the above date.
This trip will have 10 spots for members and 14 spots for prospective members(visitors). This will give us a good mix so we can give the prospective members enough individual attention on the trails. (Assuming prospective members are new 4wd owners. Please ignore if there are experienced visitors in the mix.) We will splitinto two groups once at zig Zag and start from two different parts of the track. There will be two RV points depending on people's preferences.
Rough trip guide: Wombat Holes (C), Pipelines (B), Lost City (D), Ranger Bob and Son of Bob (C), Wombat holes on top of Son of Bob (C), Powerlines (D) (Spanish steps if we have time and good mods B+) and back home.
Plan is to reach Zig Zag Railway Parking by 0845. Air down, disconnect, Convoy procedures briefing and hit the tracks by 0900. Lunch at The Lost City. Be back at the Zig Zag station by 1430. Air up and hit the road by 1500 reaching Richmond by 1600.
Trip Grades are Classed as under:
D: Easy trip, dirt road. Any AWD car will do this with ease. Probably wont need to engage 4wd.
C: Moderate trip. Car with Low range 4wd and Road tyres can run these. May need recovery (gentle tug with a snatch strap) for stock independent suspension vehicles over some obstacles.
B: Moderate +. 4wd with low range, 2" Suspension Lift and 31"+ Aggressive tyres recommended as minimum. May need a snatch over some obstacles. Need good quality recovery points. You may scratch your car (Low probability).
A: Difficult. 4wd with Low range, 2" Suspension Lift and 33" aggressive tyres and atleast one locker as minimum requirement. Good chance of damage to the vehicle.
**** P.S: Please check with your insurance company if your insurance cover includes off road damage****
Please specify which RV Point u r gonna meet up at.
RV Point 1: Richmond Mc Donalds (Brekky) (Cnr March & Eastmarket Sts, Richmond, NSW 2753) 0715 Hrs Depart for Lithgow by 0745 Hrs (Sharp).....
RV Point 2: Zig Zag Railway (Clarence on The Bells Line Of Road) Parking 0845 Hrs.....
RV point 2 is 73km from RV point 1 on The Bells Line Of Road.
Grade: The trip will be primarily C with B/B+ options (B/B+ options will be taken depending on the mods on the Jeeps on the day)
Numbers: 10 Member Jeeps including me
14 Visitor Jeeps
UHF Channel: 15
Minimum Requirements: All 4X4 Jeeps welcome irrespective of the mods. CB radio, Recovery points (Factory points will be fine if only attempting C Options, Recovery gear (Snatch Strap and 2 Shackles desirable but I will be carrying a couple incase you dont have them), Air compressor, Kids, Boyfriend/Girlfriend/Any friend, Camera, Food/Drinks of choice.

This is devastating. If this had been this weekend or next, I definitely would have been in. That weekend I already have arranged another camping 4wd trip organised. If it falls through and there is still room here I may register. Hopefully you have another of these trips soon, I've been lurking around here for a while now. I would like to get to know some other people who drive jeeps.

Just a quick question,
With the CB UHF radio is it 100% needed? If so, where am I able to find a pretty decent one for a decent price?
Thanks, Jai.
CB is a good tool to have for 4wding.... U can get a 1 watt unit for about $50.... but I am pretty sure some one will have a spare hand held.....

I can see it is forecast to rain for the next few days and I only have road tyres on my grand Cherokee. Will that be a problem?
Also don't have any front recovery hooks, but a towbar on the rear.

Hi James,
Yes stockers will have problem finding traction. We will split the group into two. One will be High mods other nearly stockers. We will run two versions of the track one easy and one challenging. But its your car and final decision is yours.
Mani
Sorry Mani, the Jeep has not been repaired in time as hoped eerrrrr............ Out for Sunday's run.....

Thanks Mani for fitting me in. It was a great day even though I had battery and tyre issues during the day. Thanks Andy for fixing the seal of one of my tyre with your expert offroad knowledge. It stayed inflated until I arrived home and is still inflated.
Those possible new members from today trip should keep their eyes open for future training days and others “C-D“ graded outings.

On Sunday the first group comprising of myself, Andy & Charl, Dave, Marty, Steve & Heyley, Piero, Dylan, Greg & Jo and Jai met up at Richmond McDonald’s at 0715hrs. I received a phone call from Rob advising us that he was having some battery troubles and will catch us at Zig Zag. After the meet and greet, convoy procedure briefing and customary coffee at the Meccas we departed at 0745hrs. We reached Zig Zag at 0900hrs and were met by the rest of the crew. The Jeeps were a mix of JKUs and JKs and on WK2 Grand Cherokee. Level of mods varied from brand new stock JKU to Gene’s monster JK with all the options ticked off. The weather at Zig Zag was a bit cold and the terrain had evidence of light to moderate rain in the couple of days preceding the trip .
By the time we aired down and disconnected Rob arrived at the parking lot. We were about to move and we had to do the first recovery in the parking lot. Rob’s battery refused to co-operate. We jump started his jeep from Daniel’s WK2 and were on our way by 0930. We arrived at the Wombat holes and had some interesting time with Rob catching some mud in the bead and Daniel in The Grand Cherokee lifting some wheels in the air. John took some chrome off his front bumper when he made contact with a pile of mud. We all got through the wombat holes and proceeded to The Pipelines. While taking the stock cars towards the bypass we noticed the top step on the bypass a bit more dug up than usual and sticky white clay on the climb up to it. A good number of cars in the convoy were running road tyres and the mud would have quickly turned them into racing slicks. That could lead to a loss of traction and possible damage to the cars and the track. A decision was made to turn the cars around and give The Pipelines and the Bypass a miss and head on to The Lost City. While turning around Sean in the Silver JK misjudged a turn and his front end slid a bit down the hill putting him at a precarious angle. Under Andy’s military expertise and great help from Rich in the red JKU and Dylan in the yellow JKU, Sean’s Jeep was stabilized and gently turned around with nil damage to the track or the Jeep. It was 1130hrs by now. From here we took the dirt road to The Lost City. Some puddles on the way were used by the guys to give their Jeeps a splash. Steve slipped a belt off the supercharger on his JK and the guys on the tail end helped him put it back on. We got to The Lost City about 1215hrs. We had lunch there and soaked in the spectacular views. On the way back we took a detour to the left going through what is known to me as Ranger Bob and Son of Bob track. The first one turned out to be interesting as the line that appeared to be the hardest turned out to be the easiest due to ample traction on the rocks. We all got up them eventually with the track claiming one of the side steps on Will’s JK giving him an excuse to ask Santa for a set of rock sliders for Christmas. There were another couple of recoveries with newer driver missing the line by a few inches. Nothing Gene’s JK standing up the hill couldn’t pull out with 3 snatch straps tied up together. Son of Bob after this was an easy affair with everyone making it up the hill without any dramas. We started driving up to the second set of wombat holes and we found the normal track washed out due to the recent rains giving us a very tight and complicated area to drive on. Again we took the bypass track to drive up to the wombat holes with only me and Rob driving through the complicated section. Rob caught some more mud in another one of his tyres. We got through the wombat holes with some cars needing minimal spotting. Rob rolled a complete bead on this track. Guys on the tail end helped Rob change is spare wheel in place of the one with the rolled bead. He still had one leaky bead which Andy temporarily fixed using a can of WD40. It was already 1530hrs by now and we decided to head home from there. We decided to call it a day here and while we were waiting for Rob to swap his tyres the rest of the crew aired up and connected their swaybars. We split the group a few Ks from the carpark with one group heading off to Lithgow through State Mine Gully Raod and the other group heading to the carpark. We got to the carpark by 1630 and were on our way home after saying our goodbyes by 1700hrs.
Damage: Broken side step on Will's JK and very negligible sill damage. John & Di broken chrome bars on the front bumper.
Cheers and Happy Jeeping!!!!
Mani :)

The other casualty from the day was my front driveshaft protective boot that got torn off on the Son of Bob climb (slip joint boot). At full articulation the driveshaft touches the auto pan and the boot gets torn off. It's common for lifted jeeps, as I have found out because this is the second time it's happened to me. Thanks to John for lending me his very sharp Stanley knife to cut away the flapping piece that was making a racket as it slapped around as the driveshaft turned.
The first time this happened was at the Watagans, and I managed to convince the dealer that I had no idea how come the boot was torn, and they fixed it under extended warranty (about $500 worth). Don't think I'll get away with that again!
So its a new Tom Woods driveshaft for Christmas (or I'll just leave it for a bit).

That shaft will still last a few years just keep the slip joint lubed up. Mine lasted 3 years before it decided to give up.
