View Full Version : Sat 15th/Sun 16th of August Rydal and Jenolan D to B Reccies
Steve F
25-07-15, 03:30 PM
WHERE: Waterfall track reccie (Jenolan on the Saturday) and other tracks (Teshie is doing Swing bridge and others). Varied on Sunday.
WHEN: Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th of August
MEET: Rydal showground, ready to head off around 9:30am on the trips, I'll be there from about 8:30am setting up camp. Camping behind the "Old Bar"
GRADE: B (For waterfall track and Mt Walker on Sunday) and lower for other tracks, happy to have someone run a C or the Saturday as well.
REQUIREMENTS: Radio. Jeep. Front and rear attachment points. Standard vehicles are OK but not for Waterfall reccie a bit of lift and decent tyres are needed from what we could see.
We visited the top of the waterfall track on a previous trip and walked a little of it, it's an interesting track not suited to stock vehicles (unless locked with an AT tyre as a minimum). Hopefully someone else will run another reccie on the Saturday for those not wanting to try Waterfall? Sunday will be varied, probably with an attempt on Mt Walker from bottom to top via "The track not many people go to", an earlyish start on Sunday to fit it in. Suitable for stock vehicles as well who want to have a look and use the bypasses or explore other areas.
There is no limit on overall numbers but the Waterfall track reccie IS limited to 8 vehicles so please let me know if you intended to do this reccie, run another trip, or hope to join another reccie in the area. There are plenty of other tracks around Jenolan we need to map out so we can easily split up and join up again after waterfall.

Steve, please put me down as a probable starter. May stay in Rydal pub.

Hi steve, kendyll and i will love to go on sunday with you guys and possibly camp with you guys on the saturday night if possible, (wont be doing waterfall track) 0466656353 is my number
Therfore will probably meet you saturday somewhere.
Hi Steve - Please count me in for both days.
I will run a D trip to Kanangra walls and maybe further onto Dingo Dell. Getting to Kanangra walls seems easy but not sure what grade that fire trail down to the Kowmung river crossing is to get to Dingo Dell... Will speak to a couple of people more familiar with the area before committing to that though and would like someone more experienced to join us, if possible.
Could also re-run the D trip to Swing Bridge, in from Black Range and out via Marsden Swamp i.e. if anyone else wants to get familiar with that and would like to run that as a trip leader.
We can discuss other options at the next meeting. And yes, please count me out of Waterfall creek run.
Thanks

Teshie its āDā, similar to what we drove on last Saturday. On the way back from Kanangra Wall take the cross over trail near Boyd River camp ground to the Dingo Dell trail, it will save you time. You will cross Boyd River, then you'll have two other river crossing on the Dingo Dell trail.

If anyone is uncertain about doing "b" grade trips they can join me. I'm learning how to approach them too. Beside Steve is very experienced with such trails and would not put us at risk.

:smile-new:
Steve F , correction, I'll be there on Sunday not Saturday as you've listed. Also you mentioned early start. Sunday, what time you propose to leave Rydal SteveF?
Is any one else going Sunday too? Can meet at maccas Richmond perhaps???

I won't bother updating the front page but just to clarify, trips leaving both days at 9:30am from Rydal, Waterfall/Beefsteak/whatever looks interesting on Saturday and the bog hole track and Mt Walker on Sunday. Also Teshies two trips, I think Kanangra Walls Saturday and Swing bridge Sunday.
Don't forget camping is $10 per vehicle for the Saturday night.

Sorry Steve, I'm out - family issues. Hope to be at the next venue.

Thanks Steve. That is correct. Fyi, I am not camping, staying over at the pub.
Kanangara Walls on Saturday and Swing Bridge on Sunday - Everyone going on these trips, Please fuel up before getting to the showground, both these trips are easy D grades but are long drives.
Can we do beefsteak on Sunday? I have unfinished business there. SteveF will understand...... But happy to wheel what ever...

Sorry, something important came up.
We're unable to attend in the a.m. but may or may not see you guys at Mt Walker.
Have fun.
Ritesh/Steve, a small mix-up here as well: I have to stay home look after my daughter on Saturday, so will come up on Sunday. Swing bridge ride.

Can't really do Beefsteak on the Sunday as we need to leave time to pack up camp so want to stay closer on Sunday and have the potentially longer day on Saturday.
No problem Sal, might see you out there.

Great day today. Thanks SteveF for taking us on Sunday through some interesting tracks. I think I need to reevaluate tyre pressures for the scrabbly rocky terrain when using AT tyres.

Cheers Steve F, had a great time today. Thanks Steve C and Alex for spotting me on the climb when it got a bit tricky.

This D-trip has it all - rolling hills, several very moderate water crossings, fantastic view of the countryside, waterhole good enough for kids splash/swim (in their woolies), picnic area with toilets, ... and of course a bush-walk to that awful, stomach churning bridge :highly_amused:. Perfect for a family day out.

Dennis, Will and I checked out the Kanangra Walls on Saturday, a long Grade D run but well worth it. Some notes and Pics are below :
9:45 Departed Rydal, right turn near Hampton onto winding Jenalon Caves Road, lovely views along the way.
10:45 Reached Jenalon Caves Road Carpark 2 (approx 60kms from showground), a short break. Toilets are available there and a short walk to a fantastic view of the caves.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll25/ritesh_inoz/KanangaraWalls/20150815_105715_zpshrnxjueb.jpg (http://s284.photobucket.com/user/ritesh_inoz/media/KanangaraWalls/20150815_105715_zpshrnxjueb.jpg.html)
11:00 commenced the climb on tar up towards Edith, took half a dozen steep switchbacks before getting to top and soon took a left turn onto Kanangra Walls Rd. This is unsealed with few tricky potholes, but mainly graded and good condition.
Noon, we arrived at Kanangra walls carpark (approx 85kms from showground). Toilets are available there and some undercover picnic \ bench area too. We took a 15 min easy flat stroll to the lookout... and WOW !

Got a little adventurous and kept walking further where we came to steps leading down to the waterfall, decided to check it out. Little did we know that it was 400+ steps down & same number of steps up !

Nice waterfall and lush green indeed.

But what goes down, has to come back up. It is a Grade B walk up without an ounce of doubt !!!
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll25/ritesh_inoz/KanangaraWalls/20150815_122925_zpsm4is843d.jpg (http://s284.photobucket.com/user/ritesh_inoz/media/KanangaraWalls/20150815_122925_zpsm4is843d.jpg.html)
1:30pm we departed Kanangra walls carpark and took a left turn onto a rather eeire track named Morong Creek trail which had a few large bog holes that we examined for depth before crossing... track led us to the Kowmung river crossing, which upon inspection looked interesting at exit point.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll25/ritesh_inoz/KanangaraWalls/20150815_141429_zpsyaygcqpk.jpg (http://s284.photobucket.com/user/ritesh_inoz/media/KanangaraWalls/20150815_141429_zpsyaygcqpk.jpg.html)
We checked the river depth and decided to give it a go, found that none of us had trouble crossing it. River can be up after rain though. So maybe a stock may have some issues. We can discuss.
Let me know if the video link below does not work.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll25/ritesh_inoz/KanangaraWalls/th_20150815_141537_zpsoiltktvr.mp4 (http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll25/ritesh_inoz/KanangaraWalls/20150815_141537_zpsoiltktvr.mp4)
After crossing the river we turned right onto Kowmung river fire trail, which is a lovely lush green graded track... dodging a few puddles, surviving a crazy swirl and a couple of kangaroos we finally made it back to the main Kanangra Walls rd back and then back on tar to Jenalon caves carpark 2 at around 3pm. Drive from there to showground is about an hour so back at the showground at 4pm.
Overall, this is a full day long run with great views and facilities \ breaks along the way. An easy and a difficult bush walk. As an option, we could add an interesting loop to add that river crossing. A trip that we can consider for the Jambo. I will upload maps for this in the next couple of days.
cheers
