WHERE: Newnes National Park
WHEN: Sat 25th July
MEET:
a) Richmond Macdonalds 7:30am
b) Zig Zag Railway 9:00am
Let me know which one you will be using
GRADE: D, a couple of the entry points are C, but this is completely a trip for non modified standard vehicles. Road tyres fine, snatch points not required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Radio and Jeep, that's it. Lunch, walking shoes.
Recovery really shouldn't be an issue. Bring maps and Nav/mapping tools if you've got them.
Bring questions. If we can't answer we will follow up later.
Bring a torch if you want to walk the glow worm tunnel. Walk will take about an hour there and back, easy walking suitable for kids. Check here for a mud map of the area (Club Member access required): http://www.sydneyjeepclub.com/showthread.php?4855-Newnes-D-Grade-Reccie-trip-details
The idea for this trip is to help everyone who wants to assist Jamboree - but is not yet familiar with the trails. We will talk about where we are and what is around us. How to get from A to B. We will drop by ZigZag on the way up, the usual entry point from Sydney, but we'll keep on going to Lithgow (thanks Dan) which is the start point during Jamboree.
We'll show you a sneaky short cut into Newnes NP from Lidsdale, and then the usual entry via Blackfellows hand. And how to get out via ZigZag.
Let us know what you want: Maiyngu Marragu Rock (Black fellow's hand), Lost City, Glow Worm Tunnel, and Garden of Stones, are all possibilities. Maybe poke our nose in to the start of Spanish Steps too.
Time may not let us do it all, so prioritise and we'll tick what is important to you.Numbers are flexible depending on interest.

Thanks Dru for a great day. Hopefully we'll get into the glow worm tunnel next time "if NP still hasn't kept the trail closed.
Cheers Rob
I shot back home via Blackfellow's Hand. No road closure. Grrr!
Think the closure must be well down on Glow Worm Tunnel Rd. Did a quick reccie following the powerlines from the mid point of Blackfellow's hand. That track has at least one section at C+ or more. Thought about it but doubled back and let it go. Best to try it again with more light. Out at ZigZag by 5:30.
Apologies on the track closure and not thinking to carry on anyway. Feel that checking out the bottom of Old Coach Road was no waste though. Better to confirm a locked gate now than later. My trip notes need updating!
Hope everyone got what they could out of the day!
Dru
Hey Dru, thanks had a great day!

Quick Synopsis:
We gave an extra 15 mins at Richmond for a late starter. In retrospect maybe I had the confirmation wrong. Still a little stressful leaving when I was thinking we had cut someone. And we got to ZigZag in good time.
Air down was restrained as there is a need for bitumen half way through with this route. Won't be a problem at Jambo where we would start from our second point. We headed for Lost Cities taking in a quick viewing of Ranger Bob. Lost Cities was cold and windy!
From there back up Blackfellow's Hand noting the side trips available. The drop down to the private Road, Collier Haul Road, is a nice addition to this D trip. Suggest it is used for the way out at Jambo. Bitumen up the Wolgan Rd to the head of Black Fellow's Hand.
There was a National Parks poster that had me confused. Apparently the Road to Glow Worm Tunnel was closed, 12km in at the boundary to the NP and alternates were recommended. Couldn't work out where the blockage was or what the recommended detour was either.
We decided to continue up the Hand and poke our nose into the start of Spanish Steps for lunch and a look see.
Having posted that that there really wasn't a need for recovery gear on the trip, one of the bog holes was a trap. Couldn't be avoided, we took to the edge to stay shallow. But the bog holes are a little shallower (smaller in area) so on the edge was actually close to the deep centre wheel ruts. Completely non-visible. Will got caught on the edge and slewed into the drop, off camber, exhaust under water.
I am expecting pics of the recovery with a Meme something like "Snatch Straps not Required". So far everyone has been too polite. BTW, this is my second vote of thanks to Brian and Andy and their recovery training. Thanks guys! Rob took control as recovery bloke, cheers Rob!
Rob and his nephew continue to entertain by hitting the odd bog hole. Hard.
Note to to the technical drivers. The rock surface on the "Hand" side of the steps have a greasy layer of clay smeared over them. Possibly from trucks exiting this way.
Back to the bitumen, to head up to Old Coach Rd for entry to Glow Worms. It's locked! Apparently known to everyone but myself. Damn. I've spent all night checking old trips logs, as I know we exited Glow Worms less than 12 months ago onto Wolgan Rd. I suspect now it was via Black Fellow's Hand. :hurt:
Mea Culpa. We signed off, most of the crew moving on to visit Newnes. Ritesh and Avani, and myself, headed back to be confronted by a wombat nonchalantly trotting up the road with a definite attitude of ownership. (Full daylight and that's a new experience for me!)
As mentioned on an earlier post I returned via the Hand to ZigZag. No evidence of road works which must be further over on Glow Worms itself.
Meh. My trip notes need updating.
Thanks for a lovely day out yesterday, plenty to learn about the area and we will remember those famous last words
Here a few snaps, I have loads of video that I am learning to edit and will post over next couple of days..
