Going to run a trip this coming Sunday (12/07), since there is a reasonable chance of snow I'm keen. Not 100% decided exactly what tracks but thinking Beefsteak if it is open, Waterfall and if there is snow Mt Bindo.
Meet: Hartley Court House (This is on Old Bathurst Road just slightly off Great Western Highway. Due to current roadworks, left turn off the highway can creep up on you and it is a single lane, so please watch out for the turn off.)
Time: 9:00am with 9:15am departure (If running late or no show please ring me on 0411 688 057 (tel:0400%20421%20782))
Grade: C and Possible B with bypasses can potentially depend on weather, Beefsteak is closed if wet but there are plenty of tracks to checkout.
Requirements: recovery points Front/Rear, recovery gear, radio, food/drink, camera and sturdy shoes. started to get cold up in the mountains.
Numbers: limited to 10
Fuel: Coming from Sydney, last servo is at Mt Victoria before Hartley. Be advised trek itself is ~60kms plus ~40kms on tarmac, Please fuel up before meeting the convoy.
Important Weather Update It's going to be cold :) and forecast snow at the moment

I prefer Great Western first thing, not much traffic and road is pretty good, distance is about the same, Great Western is a bit quicker I think as meeting point is not far past Mt Victoria.

Looking at all the weather reports probably best to come along the Great Western, they close the Bells Line if it snows much.
Weatherzone says South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT, Queensland and the Northern Territory will experience the coldest spell in at least two years, and more than five years in some places.
Snow is forecast to fall in areas of Australia’s south east down to 600 metres, including in some Melbourne suburbs and in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

^^^^ Yep, I'll be taking a saw and axe in case we need them, one of the trails we may do was covered in downed trees last time I tired to do it, the route is very flexible at the moment :)

From the BOM:
Sunday 12 JulyCloudy. High (80%) chance of showers. Snow falling above 600 metres. Winds northwesterly 25 to 30 km/h tending westerly 35 to 55 km/h during the morning. Overnight temperatures falling to between minus 1 and 3 above zero with daytime temperatures reaching between 3 and 9.
Hunty's tubed heaters may be required! A bit like tubed music, ae?

I think 9 is optimistic. When we were out there a couple of weeks ago it didn't top 7. I'm expecting it to be closer to 3 this time.
As an aside I'm taking all my camera mounts this time so hope to get some good video from the sony :)

Brrrrrrrrrr, I worked on a building project in Lithgow many many years ago when the wind came off the snow near Oberon. It was frrrrign cold and my hands turned blue. Rug yourselves up.for this trip, and I'm a definite with my nephew. We're looking for some fun 4wd spots.
Cheers RobS

I've gotta get on here more often. I keep missing good trips. [emoji20]
Oh well, we will be heading up there anyway, so the kids can build a snow man but it may even snow as far down as Lawson where we live and that will be the first time since 1957. [emoji106]🏼

Did Mount Bindo first so we could play in the snow, then out to Gibraltar Rock for lunch and then down to Waterfall Creek firetrail. Beefsteak would have been locked up due to the wet and Waterfall was too tough for all the vehicles so we'll do it again in a few weeks but as a 'B' grade trip only. The clay around Bindo was pretty slippery with a bit of snow as were the tracks in Jenolan. Then most of us decided to head back as the traffic was supposed to be real bad, heard it was a standstill from Lithgow to Katoomba. I went up Mount Victoria, traffic was stopped at the top, so cut across to Bell and did the Bells line.
While we aired up the wind was howling, along with the snow coming in sideways like a small blizzard, it was sooooo cold. The puddles were still frozen at 2:00pm and the temp didn't get above 0 for most of the day. Was great fun regardless though.
Cheers

Thanks Steve for an awesome day. Mother Nature definitely put on a great show for us. Great to see everyone again. The traffic was very slow on the Great Western heading back. Good idea leaving when we did.
cheers

I was touring the area over the weekend with a mate on his trail bike and his dad in his trusty old truck, Our plan was to camp, glad we didn't ! We decided to stay at the Rydal pub, great hospitality by Phil and generous meals.
And yep... it snowed in Rydal :)

It was snowing sideways on our way from Rydal to Hampton and looked like The Alpine Way.

Mt Bindo was fun in snow and I noticed it got much busier after 1pm there.. Think plenty of snow chasers had made it up there. A memorable day indeed. Cheers !

We were up there before 10:00am and the harder track down the other side was untouched :) I think the only ones up there before us were the 2 4wds that were already there, one guy setting up to camp for the night and family making a snow man :)
Cheers

Hoping this link and/or embed works:
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll24/DruPics/th_IMG_0035_zpsgw3kgyfa.mp4 (http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll24/DruPics/IMG_0035_zpsgw3kgyfa.mp4)
The link works. Lucky spotting that 'thing', could have caused some damage ! Nice video.
Looks like you all got first use of the tracks with fresh snow, must have been a thrill going down that harder bit... Nice work getting up there early :)
