9. REGISTRATION PLATES AND LABEL HOLDERS
9.1.1.1. provision must be made for mounting a registration plate (as shown in Figure 1) to be affixed to the rear of the vehicle so that no part of such plate is more than 1,300 mm from the ground.
The popo in NSW have apparently been told to roger as many motorists as possible LoL - 2 of my friends have recently been booked for number plate too high. my mates caravan has the plate in the factory position and has so for the last 5 yrs, yet he just got $450bux and 3 points - if you download the number plate spec from the rta website there is no mention of legal height - anyway apparently it is 1300mm from the ground - so I have changed my mount.
My good friend and Jeep legend David Woodly designed and engineered this for me, and unlike some of the currently available ones it does not rattle :) the base is a recycled coil spring bucket from a TJ.

After having read the above article I went out and measured the height of mine.
I am sitting on 33s with a 2in lift the number plate is mounted on a bracket that comes through the centre of the spare and the height from the ground to the top of the number plate is 1080mm, so from info available it would appear I am legal
Wow, I checked mine..... The top of my plate sits at 1280

With 35s and a 3" lift and aftermarket spare wheel holder I'm at roughly 1250mm. I would think most JKs are OK if mounted on the spare wheel.
Should knock up something like this for mine. Mine sits in the original position, but is barely visible by the 33" attached to my back door. Been waiting to get picked up by the police, but so far have been safe.

I got the USA plate size from the RTA and put the US plate holder on, It sits just under the rear tail light on the rear of the TJ
Well with in the requirements
Did you check for the side viewing angles required Steve?
FYI, you'll find the Legal basis for this at:
Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2007, Schedule 2, Clause 61(2)(a)(ii).

No tyre on the rear of the TJ now, So yes viewing angles are fine, Might be different when I put the spare tyre back on
