Mt Airlee Saturday 16/05/2015....
When: Saturday 16/05/2015
Location: Mt Airly
Hi Guys,
Back to some weekends off after hectic 6 months. we need to run some recce trips for Capertee. Last time I drove it was last Jambo. So not very sure how the track will be now. Also I plan to run Capertee one day and run local trips on the other 2 trip days so anyone who wants to run this trip on the other 2 pls come along for a recce......
This property is about 155ks from Blacktown and about 50ks from Lithgow. It takes about 2.5-3 hrs to get to the property from Richmond. The track is about 7.5 ks one way so about 15ks return. It takes about 5 Hrs to go up and come back to the main road This includes a 2km return walk to edge of the cliff and I cant put the views in words... They have to be seen to be believed. From Richmond it is about 11 Hrs return trip if there are no hiccups. Add another couple of hours to cover contingencies. There are no chicken tracks around the hard bits.
Please specify which RV Point u r gonna meet up at.
RV Point 1: Richmond Mc Donalds 0730 Hrs Depart for Lithgow by 0745 Hrs.....
RV Point 2: Lithgow Mc Donalds 0900 Hrs
Grade: C+ / B- (Hopefully) But could get upto an A...
Numbers: 10 including leader with 2 reserves
Minimum Requirements: 2 inch lift, atleast 31inch aggressive AT or MT tyres is recommended (Road tyres may come back with sidewall damage), This track is best suitable for cars with live axles TJs, JKs, XJs and the like.... Independant suspensions will need lockers and we may have to snatch sometimes as there are no chicken tracks. CB radio, Recovery points, Recovery gear, Kids, Boyfriend/Girlfriend/Any friend, Camera, Food/Drinks of choice.

Hi guys, I will join you at Lithgow.
I was there 2 months ago and it is very beautiful track and also walkable so if some family memebers prefer to see the action from outside it is durable
Thanks

Hey, do you think a Cherokee Trailhawk could join this trip?
Possible damage I reckon.
However, if you're convinced on THIS (http://www.sydneyjeepclub.com/showthread.php?4782-KL-Cherokee-Video-A-must-watch) you might want to try it.
Hey, do you think a Cherokee Trailhawk could join this trip?
Hi m8.... I have seen a done up independent suspension Grand Cherokee do it but I will advice seriously against it.... I haven't driven this track in 3 years so not very sure about the current condition thus erring on the side of caution. And there are no bypasses around the hairy bits........ If you are interested in seeing the track you can hitch a ride in one of the other jeeps.....

Thanks gents, She's been up zigzag and back a few times without too much concern. Unfortunately she came shod with standard HT tires and have found those to be the most limiting factor in fun conditions :(
Perhaps will step out this time, if there are any taking passenger would be interested in checking out the track. Im based out of the Nth Ryde area...
Thanks again for the feedback
Chris.

I have a spare seat in my JK if you can get out to Lithgow, you could even park at the track from what I understand? Don't really go past Nth Ryde.
Cheers
Steve
put me down as a maybe please manny. so far so good, but plans may change closer to the date
WOW, Mt Airlie is going to be busy!!!
Suzuki 4WD Club of NSW Inc. will be there too!!!
We will be staying at the pub at Capertee on the Friday and Saturday nights and doing the area over the 2 days!!
It's sort of become an annual thing we do....
Theres about 10 cars from the zook club there too....
Col should start charging, I reckon, considering it is his backyard.
That'll help fund his retirement a bit....
I don't think he owns it. Just need to drive through his property to get there

Col used to charge for access then he stopped about 4 years ago. I think the property now belongs to a mining company but he leases it back for $1 a year....... Still a matter of courtesy we always say hello on the way in....
Hi Mani,
I'm sorry Mate. I need to pull out of this trip, something very important
comes up this weekend that need to be attended to.
thanks,

Hi Mani
I have to pull out. Jeep is still in bits and parts havent arrived.
Will have to try and get up there before jambo to map it out.
Mani,
If OK with you, I might join you for the drive out, and do the first part of the trip, then return by myself ( and do a day trip to Glen Davis), or jump in with someone if there is a spare seat. I would love to do the whole trip in the Grand, but might wait until I have more suitable tyres.

I reached Richmond McDonalds at about 0715 Hrs. Greg was already waiting in the car park. We had our breakfast and just then Stephen Taylor rocked up in his new monster TJ. We set off for Lithgow at about 0750. We reached Lithgow at about 0910 Hrs. Steve F, Gene and Drew joined us from Lithgow McDonalds and we headed off for Capertee from there. WE reached Capertee, said hello to Col, aired down and disconnected. While talking to Col we also got permission to run this track with our guests for Jambo 2015. Starting off I noticed the tracks that were graded before last Jambo already getting back to their original condition. We did Miraz hill as our first challenge. Every one enjoyed it and made it up without any assistance. We descended into the valley and saw more interesting descents being carved out by the recent rains. Once across the scenic bits we came across the big climb and came across Suzuki club struggling with their 4wds. We had our part lunch up there waiting for the Zooks to get up. After they cleared it we crawled up with absolutely no dramas at all. Next was Roof Rack Canyon and the climb after it. We made it across the Roof Rack Canyon without much trouble. Stephen Taylor and Steve Forster were spotting for me up the climb after The Canyon. I crashed and banged and blamed my bad driving on the long wheel base of my JKU. After numerous attempts and massive rock slider hits I finally managed to climb up. All the Jeeps after me did it without much dramas. We came across numerous other challenging climbs and then I missed the detour for the tip again. So we went through the thick scrub getting some nice pinstriping on almost all the new Jeeps. We got to the tip eventually and parked the cars. After a nice 1.5k walk we got to the Genowlan Point. People with nice cameras took some nice pics and hopefully will be posted here soon. I warned every one of the rock step on the way back and proceeded to drop right off the same copping a massive hit on the control arm drop brackets. We managed to drive down to the base without any further incidents. Aired up and were on our way home by 1730Hrs.
Observations for the track condition: The track has been chewed up a bit over the last few years and will definitely be run as a B/B+ track for Jambo 2015. This track will be limited to Live axle vehicles with 2 inch lift and 32 inch tyres as a minimum. Rock sliders will be strongly recommended for long wheelbase vehicles.
Cheers an Happy Jeeping......
Mani
Nice to see you guys there and catch up....
It is an awesome track!!!

"B" works for me though that one obstacle after the canyon I think is "A-". Almost everyone had trouble and Mani, you weren't the only one testing out rock sliders! 11 marks out of a possible 10 to Steve (F) making the obstacle seem a Sunday picnic, cruising through on a solo attempt. Cool line, cool driving.
Wally, great to see you on the track and with a friendly bunch. That 2 stroke Zook was the bee's wang.
Yup the LJ 50 was beautiful... Hope some one grabbed a picture......
Thanks Mani, for allowing me to ride shotgun (a curious term to use when riding with Mani!), and preserving the Grand by parking it at Col's for the day.
I'm working on some short video's, but am new at the editing, so may be a few days before I get acceptable results.
Thanks for leading the trip Mani, and to all who drove on it. I now have a refreshed 'track' including the walk separately, for use for Jambo.
