Can I just take the back part of the roof off the Rubicon? The manual implies I have to take the whole lot iff. I'd like to drive with the front overhead.

Yep, just flip the tabs down at the rear of the freedom panels, if you don't they will pull down to far and the large thumb screws will go straight through it and they will be too low at the back and hit the doors. You do need to take it all off (back cant come off without removing the front first) but the front can go back on without the back.
