I don't know if anyone has been following the Chrysler and Regulator (Transportation Safety Board) negotiations over the depth of the recall program for KJs in the USA - which was called because of KJs and Grands catching fire from high speed rear end collisions (where the KJ was going slowly or stopped). KJ Model years 2002-2007 are being recalled for 'customer service'. I gather that placement of the fuel tank is the problem but really many vehicles had their tanks behind the rear axle during that period. The number of supposed fires is debatable, and I haven't heard of any in Australia. This recall apparently involves some modle years of the Grand Cherokees as well.

The 'fix' apparently involves the installation of a factory approved/Mopar tow hitch to strengthen up and protect the rear of the vehicle and protect the tank from penetration. I had to chuckle at the LOST post on this that suggested that owners should take off their aftermarket hitches and sell them so they can get a new one for free.
I do not know if this recall will make it's way to Australia, or if it will apply to CRDs which are generally accepted as being less likely to burst into flames in that sort of accident.
As I have a dealer installed Jeep towbar (at time of purchase) I doubt I will ever hear from them, but if anyone does please udate this thread with what you hear from Chrysler Jeep Australia. Of course (and this is my opinion not backed up by the factory) having the fuel tank bash plate may also negate or diminish the risk, as might other things that improve rear end protection, and/or slows or prevents deformity - like rear bars, internal rear drawer systems, etc.
