View Full Version : What would you do to a stock zj
On a limited budget, what would you do to a zj jeep....
Lift and tyres and lockers
A basic 2inch lift, to fit a set of 30's is on the list after rego and insurance. Lockers I don't think I can afford those yet.
XJ diesel front diff (same gear ratio, high pinion diff is stronger, uni joint axles are stronger), drive shaft(stronger than CV type) & transfer case ( gives you 2wd thus saving fuel). These are all just bolt in items & cheap.
Then Dana 44 rear diff.
set of sliders.
lift kit.
tyres and sway bar disconects
Keep the ideas coming hahaha, and hunno depending on the cost mayb ill have a looking into it
What type of a low budget we talking ?? Could help
Well got the auto elec bill ($500) rego + insurance ($1600) so for the time being about $1000 until I work some overtime hahaha
Disconnects, side rails, tyres (s/hand muddies).. Do not waste time with a cheap lift, you will want a better lift later so save for the lift you want the first time.... A 242 transfer case would be a good move early, a straight swap over, just keep your own linkage though............
I've got tjm side steps/ rock sliders, the transfer case swap I don't think ill be able to do that, saving the lift is a job idea hopefully I can just fit a set of 30's on it, with the disconnects I'd have to wait to the link so she the size???

31's fit, and are normally cheaper as the are a more common size. Disconnect's would be the 2nd thing(after tyres).
Transfer case anything between $150- 400. Just need to wait from the to come up.
Hunno how much do you think disconnects are worth it's just the front sway bar isn't it???

Yes just front sway bar, but the biggest advantage after muddies.

$223 ( - discount for SJC members).
Yeah that's a great little mod, pretty cheap to, I think I'll sort out the recovery points thank get that and find some muddies, I'm guessing it isn't to hard of a job to put them in??
Just realised it says 2" - 3.5" xj/zj

0-2" is the same price
Sweet so later on when or if I get a 2inch lift I won't need to change em

OK with a budget of Approx $1k here's what I'd do:
2" BB Lift (P/N RE8030)
Swaybar Discos (P/N RE1140)
Front Tow Hooks (P/N 11236.06)
HD Tie Rod (P/N 18050.51)
Front Floor liners (P/N 12920.26)
Less SJC Discount would bring it to just under $1050.
Heck if the $1000 was concrete we could probably do a deal to fit husky floor liners instead and just round it down a little ;)
That's a decent upgrade wooder but the thing is I've never done a lift, swaybar disco, tie rod.. Lol must equal a few case of beers at the next tool box meeting??? Hahahaha

I'm not bothered about the carpet so less $150 takes to $900 which I think is very reasonable for a basic upgrade plus a few cases of beer hahaha
Have you got an pump for re-inflating your tyres after a day's run..definitely a must have........... A tyre deflator is handy as well.................
I do have most of my recovery gear set up and accessories, got a few things to buy
If you go for 31" tyres, you will have to increase your steering block??( there are some pic's I have put up before somewhere back in another posting - not a computor person to give you the link to it sorry!!....... That's about an extra 2 washers per side worth of upgrade, easy ++ job. Reason for it, your 31's will rub badly under the guards even with a 2" lift, the trade off is a slightly larger turning circle........ A rubber mallet will be very handy to have as well as I use to give the inner lips of the front guards a wack to turn them back up/in as you do not see it usually unless it really bends down or you look for it after each trip offroad as the tyre lugs will just catch the inner lip of the guards when at full flexion...........
Ill have to look into it, I'll be ready to do a lift in a few months
