Was a good day, well at least for the JK Drivers .
My starter motor decided to die suddenly after i had filled up on the way to Richmond.
After a few push starts i decided that discretion was the better part of valour and parked up at the start
of the track and got a free ride with Kiwi Kev. Aaron, in his totally mad comp spec TJ , the compressor for his lockers went on the blink but he can tell that story.

Everybody loved the track with perfect conditions. The large steps near the end were driven very calmly and controlled by Kev while other people decided to use the newly formed bypass track that has been carved into the bush on the right.

Firstly thanks to everyone for a excellent day out.. and for help getting the jeep back home.

Arrived a little late :D on a beautiful sunday morning at richmond macdonalds. Got the necessary nutrient requirments for a days wheeling from inside.. nothing like a bacon and egg muffin and hash brown to hit the spot. and we headed off to wheeny creek.
Dks Tj needed a push- with starter motor problems.. (was good to work off the extra hash brown anyway :D) and we were set...

The first part of the drive was excellent- winding fire trails, with amazing views over the valley.. this took us right down to the bottom, past a camping area (which id like to return to) and over a overflow bridge.. Up the other side, we continued to the air down point..
being my first SJC run- was unsure how you grade your trips, so with the rating of C/B left my tyres at 22 psi.. (was great for alot of the fire trails between sections anyway)

set ready to go
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z129/gabrielle123_2007/192.jpg

First hill of the day was a relative straight forward decent - But we got out, picked some lines, which made for a good warm up of things to come. The beauty of this trip, is it just kept getting progressively more challenging as it continued, but with usually a fair few choices in lines.. So if i was grading the trip, the C/B rating was spot on.. but the beauty of it, was there was plenty of harder lines to pick either side of the track, so any truck could get out there and have a fun day..

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z129/gabrielle123_2007/198.jpg

The next hill saw some great drives- The red rubis clutch may not agree :D

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z129/gabrielle123_2007/206.jpg

I found my lockers werent working (were fine last trip) on a climb-- which meant i just didnt have the traction to drive it coming from the soft sandy ground.. great fun tho!

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z129/gabrielle123_2007/209.jpg

As everyone was getting more confident with the track, the JKs really started to show off a little, with some great lines right up to the big steps at the end before the look out.. There was alot of areas we got out and filmed (thanks to our young offical camera man)..

Considering its a little hard to tell a black JK apart, credit goes to all. But the drive up the middle of the steps in one of them was great to watch. These steps were a great example of the different lines to be chosen. to the far left (looking up the hill- was extremely steep, coming from rock to loose sand. would of been an interesting drive (maybe next time if my jeep holds togeather!)

My jeep was having locker issues all day- (front locker was unfortunate- compressor failure- rear locker has been worrying me for a while, and today was the day it decided to go bang, climbing up a section, with the wheels spinning freely, it just let go.. leaving my jeep wedged on a tree.. Luckily a Jk was there to lend a hand, pulling me out-(wasnt the last for the day either)
confident that everything was ok- looking at it.. was quickly gone once behind the wheel. seemed to have little drive forward, and wasnt making a great sound- wasnt long down the track, i had lost reverse- and realised somthing in the rear diff had definately let go, i stripped out my rear driveshaft, so i could get the jeep home in front wheel drive- was a horrible drive home- with the rear diff growling, and the front driveshaft trying to rattle the jeep to bits. but to its credit held togeather for the 2 hour trip back.

After everyone was up the steps, i jumped in one of the black Jks, with Dk leading, head to the look out, made most of the mishaps of the morning well worth it, blue skys, incredible view- definately somthing id do again..

hard to beat hey?
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z129/gabrielle123_2007/239.jpg

We headed back- with the afternoon quickly disappearing, alot more haste was made on the way home.. and the 3-4 hour drive in- didnt take much longer than a hour or so, with no stops, the simple lines. We were travelling really well, untill a group of toyotas and nissans, struggling all over the place held us up. not readily offering to move out, and let us pass, we kinda snuck through, taking a more direct line, while they hobbled their big landcruisers down the side.. and away we went. My jeep was running in front wheel drive- so i tryed to keep momentum up to keep me moving. unfortunately, on the bigger climbs, just wasnt enough, traction was impossible with usually just the one wheel spinning... so was nice to get dragged to the top. cheers :D

Back to the start, the jelly beans were being passed around, we aired up and headed home. Thanks to Dk for leading the trip, everyone else on it, and for those who helped the broken Tj along through the day.
Definately looking forward to the next trip, and was a great day out with the club.
never written a trip report before. so go easy ;) but regardless, thanks for a good day

The drive home saw an amazing amount of traffic coming to and from richmond. was tired, sick of my jeep, and sitting in traffic was the last thing i wanted to do.. think it must of add 40 minutes to the trip! thank you for the M7!

Thought id take some step by step pics for anyone interested. stripped my diff down to see the damage- hopefully its not to bad

drop the oil, put the diff on stands

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z129/gabrielle123_2007/268.jpg

remove the outer 4 bolts holding the axel in place

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z129/gabrielle123_2007/267.jpg

undo the 10 bolts holding the 3rd member in
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z129/gabrielle123_2007/270.jpg

pull the axels out enough, so as you can remove the diff center

take out 3rd member, needed a flat head screwy to help this along.. but came off easily

Aaron
11-07-11, 07:10 PM
think it was the straps that hold the detroit in place that let go (not tightened enough)
axels shouldnt be a problem, as 9 inch are quiet alot beefier than my dana 44.. ring gear etc is alot bigger also.

going to give lang a call tomorow, get some new bearings pressed on, and the centre shimmed and put back togeather
i have spare axels at home, once the center is done, ill put it in, and all back togeather, and get back out there again :D
