Hey Hunty

U wanna take us somewhere different like COLO, or AWABA, If not I am leaning towards Lake Lyle. The creaks will be up due to the rains so will like to do some water crossings other than that we will be travelling mostly c+ territory......

Hey Mani,

Mt Airlee near Capertee is a very nice trip about the grade you are looking for.
There is guy called Col who has a lease on the area, really nice guy. The NPWS want to shut the track off
but he tells them where to go. He asks for a $5 charge to drive the track. Well worth it with great view north. Access is denied if heavy rain. Its about a 3hr drive there and back excluding the nice walk at the end. Could be combined with Sunny Corner or return through Zigzag.

I will probably post a trip up for this track soon anyway.

Heres a pic of it when i had my 'fender:

SJC member Phil Reid has been up there many times with his modified Hilux and he knows Col fairly well through the Wollongong club's use of the tracks. Speaking to him yesterday he recommended taking the time to do the walk at the top (there is a locked gate up there to protect the rare plants apparently). According to Phil, Col took the NSW Parks to court to keep the track open (they wanted to lock it off at the bottom).

Just an update on the trip...
Had a brief talk with Col on Tuesday and the track is open, no problems. There hasn't been significant rainfall to degrade the track so that should be OK. He was kinda apologetic that he hadn't maintained the track of late and it was pretty rough... mmm, i was really upset to hear that 8).

If anybody is dropping out, post up so we can let the reserves have a chance.

I was thinking of a Plan 'B" - if the weather does turn bad - (you dont really want to drive Mt Airlie in torrential rain, trust me) we could do the Sunny Corner Track, which has one optional steep rutted out hill climb.

My mob is 0434 848 482 if required.

Cheers

See everybody Sunday morning. Dont forget your coins!
I will most likely be at the Lithgow meeting point as i might be up there on saturday and stop over with some Landy dudes:mad:.

Theres meant to be a low pressure front moving in from SA and reaching NSW by Sunday so it might be a bit damp. If Col decides its too wet for access we can do the Sunny Corner track which is worthwhile.

Cheers

Lithgow is too far a drive for us Southsider’s to easily meet up by 9am. It takes around three hours so to avoid a 6am start on Sunday we'll be driving up late Saturday afternoon and spending the night in a Lithgow Motel.

I'll have the wife and my two daughters (6 and 2) with me so to have some fun we're planning on heading out around dusk to a campground somewhere to make a campfire to roast marshmallows on. It mightn’t seem like much but to my six year old roasting marshmallows on a campfire out in the bush is as exiting and adventurous as trekking through the Amazon would be for us.

DK, you mentioned that you might be staying over with some mates, is that camping? If there will be any kids in that group maybe we could meet up? Jose, you mentioned that you are brining your girls. How old are they? Is anyone else brining their kids?

Miraz is definitely not the kind of guy to do anything by half measures. Everything he does he does is the best that he can do. So he didn’t settle to just blow one diff today, the poor bugger blew both. My heart goes out to you buddy.

Damn. That's no good. Did he have to get towed ?

Miraz
20-02-11, 07:44 PM
Yeah - got towed home....front locker disintegrated and one of the rear axle shafts snapped!

Many thanks for everyone that was involved in the recovery and tow back into town, it was much appreciated...the whole thing was handled with very little unnecessary drama.

The new rear diff was dropped off at the sandblaster last week, guess I need to get it finished and installed a little sooner than expected...

Yeah, thats just the first fun bit, its goes on for another 4km with some good bits.
I drove it the day before with some Landrover boys which took all day due to a few vehicles running open diffs, blah, blah. and I got a bit toasted with the heat, standing around and snatching, winching, etc.

So yeah i would think a return trip is on the cards.
Just a word of caution - i wouldn't be venturing on this track if the weather is real iffy, such as last week on Mt Walker, - the track is one way, btw, meaning you return along the same route. There are alot of rock sections which probably hold their friction when wet, but the track has roughened up which would chew out further in bad conditions.

I see it has a ballistic fab cover and truss. Did you use their 14 bolt shave kit as well? Did you turn down the ring gear on a lathe as well?

Miraz
26-02-11, 01:24 PM
Ballistic were doing deals on pre-turned down ring gears, so I got they ring gear already turned down.

The shave kit consists of the cut down rear cover and bottom plate....the truss is from Blue Torch Fab, the Ballistic one is huge!

I'm familiar with ballistics stuff, I used a lot in my build. They are a great company that makes great products. Are you planning on tieing in the truss to the cover at all? I personally would be a bit concerned with it the way it is. This is assuming you are running the upper links off the truss, if not then disregard my comment.

Also, what the WMS in inches? Any plans on shortening it to get closer to jeep width of about 60" or are you going to run it full width?

Miraz
26-02-11, 03:39 PM
The truss is tied to the pinion bolts, so it should stay in place. :-)

The Jk is 65" wide as stock, so I am aiming for just under 68" for the 14 bolt
