Don't know if this wil work or not, however in the fuel pods of choppers they have an air bag system to eleviate this very problem.
Maybe a kids floatie would work, or Charl suggests a post pack air bag for packing breakables from Australia Post.

It is only reserve / emergency water, I will have 20L inside as well - so I guess if it gets too hot to drink Ill just have to decant it and wait for it to cool down D'oh! LoL

Not to rain on any parades, but if you already have 20 litres of water in the car, why do you want more on the roof? Unless of course you want to use it for showers, then hot will be great! (Paint the tube black :D) We only have two, one night "bush" camps, and they will be right next to rivers (full of crocs) so a bucket and rope can get you heaps of 'incidental' water.

Then again, have just read all your electrical posts. If you run out of water, and we find a straight bit of track, all you need to do is get up to 142 kph (88 mph), you already have the 1.21 gigawatts, just go back in time to when you had plenty!

Sorry, just can't help the movie references ;D!

In prep for the soon (yes I'm getting excited) trip to the Cape I decided that I needed to sure up the JK Achilles heel ........ the front track bar mounts LoL

I don't want to be tightening up my trackbar / panhard bolts every 500km (my interval guess based on the corrugations in the OTR) so I have;

1. Changed the stupid Chrysler threaded bolts for slightly larger shanked 9/16th bolts - the threaded chrysler bolts have a tendency to file away at the holes until they get sloppy and ultimately Death wobble will ensue.

2. Cut out some 8mm thick plates from Stainless steel and drilled them with a hole exactly 9/16th...... welded them on both sides of the 2 mounts and then spent way too long trying to get the bolts and track bar back on my Jeep . hammering, bashing and much swearing LoL

My front end is now tighter than ......... hmmm..... its ever been. LoL

I still need to deal with my stupid steering damper.
I used stainless steel in the hope that it will not easily get flogged out and I assume that the high tensile bolts will wear before the stainless steel plates wear! - they should be easier to replace.

Hi guyz
I was given 3 alloy knobs for my aircon control panel, and I have tried several times to install them, but damn the factory knobs are so hard to remove - I finally decided to pull them off no matter what, so I got a large adjustable pliar/vice grips and squeezed and pulled until I almost blew a valve - I finally got them off and yes they look a little worse for wear now (especially after I squeezed and chomped on them) - If you intend to pull off the factory knobs be aware you will be in for quite a fight almost as much of a fight as the gear knob!

I bought a second hand gas strut from a very esteemed member of our Club (Rob & Tania) and finally got around to installing it, it has bugged me so much when trying to get stuff out of the back to have to hold the tailgate open! - so I drilled a hole in the tailgate tapped a thread into it and voila ....... the tailgate stays open all by itself!

I was heading across town earlier today and saw a commodore broken down in the middle lane on the steepest part of Concord Rd just near Victoria rd, I was heading the other way and thought "Poor B@$tard" it was 28 - 30 degrees . anyway an hour latter I was coming home and he was still there, with 3 lanes of traffic well 3 lanes trying to merge into 2 & 5km tail back - traffic Jam - gridlock - bumper to bumper - whatever LoL so when I finally got past him I stopped and offered to help, the poor guy told me he had been abused and honked at (he had his bonnet up and hazzards on) - So I Jeeped Him into the shade and out of harms way.

Just a few more littlw things before I takeoff for the Cape

Diff breathers, got a kit off ebay delivered for $23 just lucky my Jeep wasnt a cruiser because the the supplied amout of blue hose was just enough to do my little shorty
I found somewhere to stow 2 jerry's and 1 x spare skin / tyre
Installed the Engel fridge that I borrowed - bit of a tight squeeze but thankfully I can reach in with my gorilla arms - should be able to get to the grub without having to pull it out of my Jeep (decided I wasnt going to afford a slider
3 or 4 more days of work and Jax & I will be on our way!

dont mean to rain on your ideas but how are you meant to use your tent, dont they open backwards over the back of the jeep? or have you turned it around to open another way.

my rtt opens out the back - the jerry's and spare tyre will be stored under my jeep at night - all i did was get a plastic pallet , cut it down to size to fit between my roof bars! too easy and not too heavy!

Yep I have a hard top - its in storage (so its basically brand new) I thought of using it but I really like to have the side off under the awning whilst I camp! - re dust - I will either be first or last LoL

Those of you who drive a lifted JK with muddies & soft top will know how noisy they can be at 110kph - I can barely talk to my beautiful Passenger / wife Jax and as some of you know I am heading up to the Cape tomorrow, My JK is so loud that I have to turn up the stereo to 25-30 just to hear it, which over a long drive (25-30hrs just to Cairns) will cause some serious fatigue & deafness LoL.

I wanted to add a communications system or something to my JK that would allow me to talk to the Mrs (kinda like the rally navigator com system)
I wanted to also include my CB & phone, so again with a fist full of sm@rt@$$ pills I began to dream. Heres what I came up with;

I purchased a Pilot / Aviation comms system off Ebay ($35), 2 noise cancelling Pilot headsets with Gel muffs ($105) and a 6 pin Uniden compatible CB mic plug ($4).

I began to reverse engineer the Aviation comms system and discovered that the 2 headset plugs are wired fairly straight forward, the regular size 6.5 Jack is wired conventionally ring tip sleeve = left right shield (too easy).
The slightly smaller jack plug (Mic) is wired sleeve = earth, ring = Mic hot and tip = push to talk.

I then pulled apart my Uniden CB mic plug & microphone and tried to figure out what was going on inside the mic (because my mic has call & instant buttons on it). I discovered that the 6 pin contained; Mic in, PTT, Earth, Audio out and control for the channel up down inst and call, = perfect.

I wired up the Aviation system to the Uniden 6pin plug and it all worked perfectly NOT LoL - several attempts later (OK 8) my dumb@ssnes got all the wires on the right pins!

So heres what I ended up with;

Vox operated Comms so I can talk with my wife as we drive.

Ipod input so whilst I drve I can talk with my wife and enjoy music!

Iphone integration so I can answer calls whilst I drive and talk (Vox) with my wife! and callers.

CB integration so I can talk with my wife & listen to music & listen to the CB and answer calls from my Iphone and....... talk on my CB! - & If I choose all at the same time and the person on the phone can't hear the person on the CB & vice versa - only down side is wearing the headset and the Mrs can hear my phone calls!

ps the Headsets that I bought have a 3.5 mini jack on the side so If I really wanted the mrs & I could listen to different music as we drive and still be able to talk to each other!

Good thing you worked all that out there Hunty. Had i know i would have given you a set up I used on my bike for the Mrs & me that i no longer use. But since you worked all that out & it works & its in the JEEP, let us know how it goes!

Maaaaaaaaaaate - thanx for good info (you suck LoL) why am I the only one who has a noisy Jk D'oh.... its not my tyres (I don't think) - maybe its my light bar - Have you driven from Sydney to Newcastle @ 110kph - I have made quite a few trips to Melbourne and the noise just gets to me - ergo the Cesna Headset cheers Hunty

you'll probably find it is your light bar, bonnet scoop, and all the other stuff hanging off your car.... ive heard if you wrap some rope around the light bar is disrupts the air going over it and makes it quieter...... but thats jsut what ive heard.

I travel up the f3 often like I said 110 it's quite... Switch to hard top too much it will help soft top sounds like your living in a tent in cyclone....

I noticed the BFG are noisy 40-90 but after that the noise goes away. What pressure are you running? I have heard most muddies get noisier as they wear.
Perhaps try some non muddies for a run and see if in fact it's the tyres????

Jax & I had a blast, got to put the JK through its paces and it did very well!

Nearly 8000km in under 2 weeks,

Great wheelin,
Tope end of OZ is simply beautiful.
The only vehicles I didnt get under I think were Glens & mine!!!
Made it there AND back on the OTT and according to the guy at the servo near Palm creek one of very few 4x4's to get up and out without winching!
Loved the KM2's (33' Mud terrain tyres) - ran them @ 25psi on the way up and 21psi on the way back, no punctures or issues.
Nothing rattled loose or off - which is a pretty awesome achievement given the crazy corrugated roads. gotta love the Jeep JK.
The coffee machine and microwave were great to have on the trails, kept the Mrs happy LoL. sadly we didnt get to complete the trip as Jax was quite sick, infact she was very sick when we left Sydney and just got sicker so we bailed in Saisa and did the bolt home (3 days) from Cape to Sydney - gotta luv the Jeep JK.

Jax & I shot heaps of video, mainly the fun parts of the trail! (Wheelin) I put together the following video of just my experiences and as a taste of what is to come when I get chance to edit ALL the footage together of all the SJC Cape tripers.

I have had a niggling fault in my JK for about the last 20,000km. Jeep has been unable to identify the problem because every time my Jeep is in for service the fault goes away! D'oh and this has really hacked me offffffff! - because the fault is;

3 yellow lights of death - fishtail, ABS and ESP and when these lights come on the cruise control won't work.

NO Cruise control for me is extremely frustrating let me explain..... when driving home from the Cape i was trying to avoid getting a speeding fine (QLD mobile speed cameras have only 1 or 2km tolerance and no warning signs) so I was driving @ 100kph 2 seconds looking at the road and 1 sec looking @ the speedo so you can imagine my fatigue with only a 3 sec loop. I got tired so I slowed down to 95kph to avoid the 3 second fatigue cycle and soon realised that this speed is more dangerous than 130kph.... let me explain..... big trucks drive right on your @ss and try to pass you in dangerous places. so now i am getting very pissy about the lack of cruise control.... I was actually happy to get into school holiday traffic just so I could just sit and steer again.

I was driving around Sydney on monday when the 3 lights of death came on so I rushed over to my favourite Jeep Dealer service (Artarmon) and asked Riz (worlds best service manager) if he could quickly plug in to my Jeep his scan gauge and and whilst the fault was there diagnose it. SADLY his scan tool was getting new software loaded into it and this would take a day or so D'OH. I then went to Mosman Jeep Service and thankfully the fault lights were still on when I got there and they were able to tell me that the fault was coming from the front drivers side speed sensor - of course they didnt have 1 in stock so I ordered one from melbourne! ($55 bux)

Replacing the drivers side front speed sensor is a fairly easy and straight forward job took me 30 min - you will need a 21mm spanner to release the disc brake assembly and a 13 (I think) to remove the 3 unusual shaped bolts that hold the hub / unit bearing - you will need to pull out the front drivers side drive shaft just an inch or 2 to allow you to get the speed sensor out around the disc brake protector plate / dust deflector and an allen key to release the sensor itself.

1. Jack up Jeep (Safely)
2. Remove wheel
3. Remove disc brake assembly
4. Remove 3 bolts that hold the unit bearing / front hub
5. Pull driveshaft out a couple of inches (30 - 40mm)
5. Using an allen key remove bolt from speed sensor and gently prise up and out the speed sensor
6. Carefully remove the speed sensor wiring clips etc so the wiring is all free
7. TIP I couldn't reach the plug to unplug the old speed sensor so heres what I did - I carefully pulled the old speed sensor of the rear of the shock tower - all you have to do is pull gently its only held with soft christmas trees - and feed it forward towards the radiator until you can easily see and unplug the old sensor -its one of those stupid jeep locking plugs * be careful the plastic will probably be brittle from the engine bay heat - you don't want to brake the special locking system. unplug old sensor
8. Connect new sensor
9. feed the sensor and wiring back the same way you pulled the old on out
10. push the new sensors plug christmas trees into the rear of the shock tower.
11 Reverse steps 1-5.

I jumped into the drivers seat and started my jeep up all excited to see the 3 yellow lights now off and damnit they were still on D'oh - thankfully after driving for about 50meters the 3 lights went out and I havent seen them since and the cruise control now works faultlessly! YAAAAA

I fully expected to find some evidence to suggest the old speed sensor was dead - previously (Sunday night when I got home from the Cape) I pulled out the speed sensor to see if it was dirty etc and it was immaculately clean, so when I pulled the sensor out this arvo I expected to find some physical damage to the cable / sensor...... I closely examined the sensor and every mm / inch of the wiring and no visible damage at all - my suspension doesnt put any strain on the wiring even at full droop so I dont expect to find internal cable damage - there will be a post mortem LoL - I havent had chance to put a meter over it yet (I will soon) but to my eye the old sensor looks just fine

re the legality of the doors - here's what I have been led to believe ;

Its a convertible ergo its legal to have the roof off.

and just like a mini moke has no doors and thats how it was complied so was the Jeep

ask the motor bike cop where his doors are LoL

I think Pura Vida got copped for no doors & he beat it in court - there is a sticker on the soft top that clearly states that the roof & doors are only for protection from the elements and provide no Safety.

There are Jeep ads on TV with the doors removed ergo doors must be optional.

There are also Jeep ads on TV showing them jump jeeps into the air - do that to a JK with its plasterscene dana30 front end - take it to the dealer and ask for warranty & show em your bent front axel and tell them you were just copying the AD and see what the say LoL

Seriously though they look great nice profiled fit compared to the bag over the top of the seat approach of one size fits all stuff you normally find at the markets and fit great with your red/black theme

the doors debate has been going on since day 1............as far as i know, jeeps were never ADR'd without doors, thus doors must stay on... however, if you get a cop who wants to ping you then he will.....no matter what, doors are the least of my worries when it comes to cops pulling me over......

I was reprogramming my aeroforce gauge earlier today and noticed that I had a bolt almost completely out - it had worked loose somehow.


As I stated in my Cape trip report that nothing had worked loose and my Jeep had survived the nearly 8,000km trip so it must have worked loose since then LoL .


I am not sure what the bolt does and didnt really look into it - my guess is that it has something to do with lowering the front windscreen - that or its structural / roll cage related D'oh.


Either way I believe all Jkers should check for this condition ASAP as an important matter of safety.


My advice to all JKers is take a look and see if yours is OK.

I have just recently dumped the Roof Top Tent in favour of a light weight camper trailer, I really loved the roof top tent for the following reasons;


1. Jeep is shorter LoL.
2. Easier to reverse.
3. Great breeze up in the tent.
4. Doesnt take much toll on my Jeeps 4x4 ability.
5. Cost under $1k - Ebay.


Why did I ditch it for an old second hand camper trailer?...;
1. I like to setup camp and then go wheelin!
2. I hate zipping up the dust proof / water proof bag. Hate is probably not a strong enough term. It just pissed me off and $h!t3d me to tears!
3. I almost fell down the ladder a couple of times trying to stagger out for a leak in the middle of the night. LoL
4. I like the extra space (and my old 42inch plasma fits nicely on the mattress).
5. It only weighs 210kg's and doesn't require checking to register.
6. loads of storage space.
7. Doesnt take much off my GVM (21kg).
8. I get better fuel economy towing it than than I got with the Roof Top Tent.


Just went camping with my 4 kids + 1 extra boy friend & 1 sons best friend, I piled on top of the camper trailer;
2x Tents.
3 swags.
1 BBQ & gas bottle.
1 waeco fridge.
tarps.
folding chairs.
Plasma TV inside on the queen size bed.
6 fishing rods & tackle.
camp furniture inc table, cooking surface and sink.
microwave, toaster & Cappuccino maker.
Sleeping bags pillows and bags of personal fx / clothing


I had a great weekend with my kids and love my new camper.

Maaaaaaaaate - I did notice it on the weekend but I did have a heap of gear on top of the camper, I run 4.56's on 33's and despite me getting up it and the hilly terrain I was driving (Dharag National Park vis wisemans ferry) I still got better fuel economy than I do with the roof top tent - still got plenty of power - I went up the F3 to pick up my kids from morrisett and I used 6th and occasionally 5th and didnt drop below the posted limit! schweeeeet!...... so my answer is barely notice it! cheers Hunty

Apart from taking a 40" plasma camping just being plain wrong ;) be aware that if you transport them flat the weight of the glass in them can causing it to crack as they are not built to be transported flat only upright :(

The camper is cool, I love taking my camper over the RTT but the camper is not always feasible and the RTT is still pretty convenient, 21 days straight in it says something for it :) I had no worries zipping up the cover etc each morning. My favourite setup is the RTT on the top of the camper, easy to setup and leave and sleeps 7 with the lower room.

I really wanted an offroad teardrop but I couldnt find 1 under $12k and.... on road teardrop for under $8k - so i went with the camp trailer - OK you watched me zip up Miraz's & my RTT every day on the Cape trip and you didnt share any of your smart@ss pils with us LoL - - so whats your secret to getting your RTT zip bag back on painlessly?????cheers hunty

I didn't see you guys pack up the RTT's that often ;) No real trick to it though, I just made sure the flaps over the windows were attached to their toggles and this helped it fold up quite tidely. Once it was folded up a quick run around each side to tuck any bits in that hung out and then putting the top on was easy, if the zipper is hard to reach in places put a longer cord on it.

Ooops mised some questions, that solar panel you see there is just the little 30W portable one, the camper has a 170W panel on the roof, it can be removed to get full sun if needed but I've never had to and keeps my 100AH battery charged all the time. So 200W if I need it through a MPPT regulator which will take the 48V of the 170W panel and turn it into a charging voltage for the battery, I've seen it putting out 6A just sitting on the roof not aimed at the sun or anything

Yep, fridge will run endlessly as long as there are a 3 or 4 hours of sun in the day. If I miss a day then I can catch up on the next day :) or put the firdge in the Jeep for a day or so to reduce the load on the camper battery and let it charge up. So yep, totally self sufficient with the camper and Jeep :)

Actually checking the specs max voltage of the panel is 36V, it's a 24V house panel with a max power voltage of 36V, after the regulator it tops out at around 15A going into the battery :) If it's getting 15A that is close to the typical load of my fridge for a 24 hour period (I have it down low at night) :) Add in the little extra from the 30W panel and I really only need 1 1/2 good hours a day to be self sufficient.

Its on the Hawkesbury river - the caravan park is the "Riverland" its on the road from wisemans ferry to peats ridge about 5 - 10 min from the ferry - very peaceful we were the only ones there - beautiful powered sites with private shade / cooking table & seating boat ramp shower / toilet - even your own private street light / fluro

I need (want - LoL) and Engel fridge 40L - don't have the cash to buy one D'oh but I do have a hard top that I used for a couple of months (see pic of when it was last on my heep - pre dates Light bar, snorkel, winch and just about everything else).


Anyway I guess its gotta be worth at least $ 1500 as is the new Gold Engel aniversary fridge...... so if anyone is interested in a swap pm me.

I have to admit to doing a very bad thing to my JK, I was driving along a dirt road - very wide maybe 12 - 20meters, 40 - 60kph looking for something on the back seat and not watching where I was going when I drove through a washout maybe 30cm - 50cm deep and 1-2 meters across. What a disaster! , I watched all my shoot equipment, cameras lights etc jump up into the air and hit the roof.


I hit the roof (soft top) via the sound bar and still have a sore neck (yes I was wearing my seat belt).


Thankfully I did NOT end up staring at my air bag!


I don't know how I got away with it but I I've done 500km since and I haven't Identified any damage to the JK other than my busted drivers seat.


I have after market upper and lower control arms that are designed with huge bends in them, they may have absorbed some of the impact.


I have welded up my axel C's - this may have helped to save the JK's pathetic D30.


My tyres were 29psi so i guess they sucked up some also.


I'm a 6'4 fatass and after the accident I could barely see over the dash LoL. my seat had collapsed totally.


Upon investigation I discovered that I had cracked a cast piece of metal that connects the height adjusting pump handle mechanism to the top half of the seat frame.


How to Fix?
I could easily buy a second hand seat as there a plenty of guys replacing their factory seats- but I wanted it fixed immediately as It is my daily drive!


I decided to pull it apart and hopefully drill a hole and put a bolt in or something, Nup couldn't easily do that.


after some smart@ss pills I decided it would be very easy to manually put the seat at the desired height and weld it up - so i did.


1. There are 2 bolts each side that hold the back rest to the seat remove them.
2. Disconnect the cable operated folding seat mechanism, remove the philips head screw that holds the white plastic cable guide.
3. Manually set the seat height and weld up the 2 rolling hinges (dunno what to call them LoL) see pic where it says weld here!
4. Reassemble and voilla good cheap fix!

I decided after returning from the Cape that I needed to review my suspension.


I desired to go up another half to one inch, I want my JK to sit at wheeling height with all my crap in it and it not look like a lowrider LoL.


I removed my old 2 inch lift RE HD springs, Accos adjustable spring perches and rancho shocks. (Thought I might have broken / worn out the rear Ranchos).


I trialled some really nice Poly performance 4.5 inch lift springs - they rode and felt perfect for my heap however with all my crap inside were not high enough.


I removed the Poly's and installed some really huge Rock Krawler springs and because I think I might have killed my Rancho's I switched them for some s/hand but near new OME's. (I also have some S/Hand Full traction shocks that I may try next.).


I have also decided to invent my own Height Measuring System - something easy that everyone can do and something that took into consideration spring lift and wheel / tyre size increases - and that is to measure height from the ground to the door, too easy YaY.


This morning before I started switching springs and shocks my Jeep JK's doors were 680mm from the ground and now they are 705mm ( I expect the springs will settle a little in a few days). and when I get all my work equipment back in etc my Jeep will then be back to the height it was engineered @.


Switching springs on the rear of a JK is very straight forward. I always do it in my driveway.


1. undo the sway bay bolts at the lower diff connection.
2. remove the lower shock bolts.
3. unclip the ABS wires from the chassis so they don't get pulled / strained.
4. unbolt the brake lines from the chassis mounts so they don't get stretched / damaged.
5. unbolt the 2 little nuts that secure the handbrake cable (above the diff).
6. jack up your jeep - I jacked mine up higher than a wheelie bin LoL see pics - you don't even need to use spring compressors if you jack the crap outa it LoL.
7. play safe peeps - use jack stands b4 you get under it - I always do, you can't see em in the pics but rest assured they r there.


I am very happy with how it drives now and I have 6 days off over Christmas so I will load it up with the Engel, microwave and cappuccino machine......, then I will hook up my camper trailer and see how it goes!

I have just made a little much needed upgrade to my camper trailer by changing the tow hitch to a TREG.


It became obvious over the Christmas New year break whilst wheeling hard with the camper on the back the std tow ball was under huge stress and I was asking it to articulate more than it was designed for.


I had to moderate my wheeling for fear that I was going to destroy the std coupling and end up towing the camper home with chains


On steep hill climbs the angles demanded by the trail exceeded the capability of the std coupling and I noticed that I was bending the cr@p out things.


So I was lucky enough to have a mate who ownes a trailer spares repairs business (who owed me a favour) and he freebied me a very nice Treg coupling and welded it on.


I almost immediately went to test it on a steep incline that had previously been impossible for the std coupling and it was no problem at all in fact it still had probably 10 - 30 degrees? left to spare.


my 2c - the Treg style couplings are defiantly a good thing - highly recommended

there is a genetic weakness in the link that controls the JK transfer case, if you put too much pressure on the 2H,4H & 4L lever in the cab it can easily come adrift.


Heres what I always do;


1. I ensure that b4 I change the transfer case lever that I am parked on a slight down hill, enough of a slope that if from stopped/parked I release the brake the Jeep will start to roll slowly forward by its self.


2. Put it in neutral & clutch in.


3. I then gently apply a quick action on the lever and if it feels like its going to shift easy I push it home.


4. If I feel resistance then I release the brake gradually and as the jeep starts to roll forward I try again and again and again (gently) slowing the Jeep with the brake and then letting it roll again - eventually the gears will all match up and it will engage easily.


I hope this works for you too

Good on ya Hunty.... Love to see a man enjoy every minute of his life....... Keep recovering Missans and Toymotas.... Went driving at Zig Zag with guys from work.... 2 of them already bought Jeeps since I started wheeling with them. One traded in his modded Challenger and the other gave his 3 inch lifted Missan GU Pootrol to his wife for the school runs. The third one with 4 inch lifted Hilux on 32 inch muddies kept me busy recovering him all day..... Now he reckons a front locker on his already 4 inch lifted Hilux will make his rig go farther than my 2 inch lifted Jeep with open diffs...... Well, I didnt want to break his heart, but he will find out soon enough.....

This is the grand daddy of all mods, I've been longing for this one since I first wheeled my JK,


Lesson learn't - should have bought a rubi to start with (when I bought my JK it was the only second hand JK for sale in OZ).


Finally after 130,000km my Jeep now has a 4.1 transfer case from a brand new Rubicon that someone upgraded to an atlas. Thankyou Ebay Christmas day 2011 and for no one else bidding on it.


I now have a final drive ratio in low 1st of 83.38 to 1 :).

The Problem with my power steering started firstly by my Jeep JK not wanting to turn left (no power assist) then it wouldn't turn right, then it wouldn't turn either way.
It was ok on the highway but slow turns became dangerous as sometimes I would have power assist and sometimes I wouldnt - parking it was a guaranteed to be an arm buster LoL.


I took it to my favourite Jeep service centre and they replaced the power steering pump (under my extended warranty) sadly that was not the solution :(


They said it needed a new steering gear / steering box $3500 and my extended warranty only covers parts to the value of $2000 D'oh


As there is no way in hell that I was going to pay $3500 I thanked them for the new power steering pump and drove off quite flat....


I decided to pull the steering box out and take a look at it myself, I discovered that the sector shaft was still straight :) good news and that I would try and find someone to rebuild it with new seals etc.


Wooders (U Legend) put me onto a company who are / were awesome !!!!
Australian CV & Power steer 9638 0022 Rydalmere Sydney.
They rebuilt my power steering box with new seals etc for a small fraction of what it was going to cost me to go genuine Jeep.


Heres how to DIY
1. Go and buy a pitman arm puller $30bux at super cheap - the job is absolutely impossible with out it - ask me how I know, I dare you LoL and 500ml of power steering fluid $12bux genuine Jeep.


2. Turn your steering wheel 90degrees to the left (from dead straight ahead) Bungee cord your steering wheel so it can't move - trust me on this you do not want to have to replace your clock spring because your steering wheel moved during the repair.


3. Remove your airbox and in my case unsilicon my snorkel D'oh.


4. Unbolt your drivers side trackbar and drop it out of the way.


5. Get a 32mm socket and remove the big nut that holds the pitman arm on - my 32mm didnt fit - don't know why - the book says its 32 D'oh so I used my king Kamayah shifter.


6. Soak the pitman arm in WD and apply the puller, tighten it like you plan to break it - I used a 400mm pry bar and gave it all I had - then I had to get a 750mm piece of thick gal water pipe and belt the cr@p out of the pitman arm from above inside the engine bay - hitting down to finally get it off - this is by far the most difficult part of the Job.


7. unbolt the connection between the steering wheel and the steering box / gear - the bolt should be easy to get t (that why I suggested you turn the wheel 90deg to the left - I hope this works for every one :) slide the telescopic shaft out of the way.


8. Remove the 2 hydraulic lines and if you are quick enough you can undo them and raise them up higher than the bottle & pump so you don't loose to much fluid - tie them up out of the way.


9. undo the 4 bolts that hold the power steering box to the chassis and remove, I chose to wiggle mine up around the radiator hoses and out the top - but I could see how some may prefer to drop it out the bottom.


10. Take it to Australian CV & Power steer 9638 0022 Rydalmere Sydney or your cities equivalent and ask them to refurb it for you (provided you haven't bent your sector shaft - if you have bent it do not pass go and throw it in the bin.


11. Replace the Oring seals on the 2 hydraulic lines and If you were very careful as I was when you pulled it all apart, you should be able to put it all back together without the need of steering help / wheel alignment - the pitman arm is keyed and if you followed my suggested DIY tips it will go back exactly as it came out - mine did :)


12. Lastly, remove the cap off the fluid reservoir top up the fluid to the mark and start your engine - let it idle for 3min


13. I chose to go for a drive but you could do this next step stationary if you hate your drive and your tyres - in 1 st gear I idled along my street slowly turning from lock to lock 10x - then back in the drive way and let idle for 3min and your done check fluid level & put the cap on - well I was done at least - no more air bubbles.

That's a big sweeping generalisation to make..

- any research to back that up?
- there are several aftermarket extended warranties that cover repairs up to the agreed value of the vehicle

They said it needed a new steering gear / steering box $3500 and my extended warranty only covers parts to the value of $2000 D'oh


As there is no way in hell that I was going to pay $3500 I thanked them for the new power steering pump and drove off quite flat....


There is NO worthwhile extended car warrenty insurance available in Auss.............. Are a TOTAL rip-off of the custumor's money


I have enjoyed my extended warranty and highly recommend it - its generally been very good :) - cheers Hunty

Just take one out and then read the "Fine Print" as they say and then jump through their hoop's to get thing's done.... e.g, cheapest part available, only partially will cover cost of repair etc, but suppose getting up to 50c per dollar (if you get that lucky) is better than nothing.. Known toooo many folk's whom have been through the same game.......... Also earns the caryard an extra $$ or two in commission.....Lol......

The car yard schemes tend to be pretty bad, there are few insurance backed schemes that are *much* better...I spent a lot of time going through fine print.

I had a very bad experience with extended warranties.... My previous XJ purchased from a car yard along with a 3 year warranty ( dont laugh I was new in Australia and believed every Aussie to be very honest man. I beleived him when he told me I was like his little brother and he wouldnt lie to me and said its covered bumper to bumper.......) It was covered bumper to bumper but only upto $500 each claim as mentioned in the very fine print on the very last page of a 50 page booklet... The tranny I blew was much more than that..... So wouldnt trust the car yard guys and their warranties even if they promised with one hand on the Bible.......

This poor guy had caused a nearly 1km jam as he was blocking the Comenarra Parkway left turn lane at the lights, Fox Valley rd. He was a pretty cool dude and fellow 4x4'r -I say he was pretty cool because he said nice things about my Jeep :) lol


I got to use my new low 1st gear to pull him up onto the Kerb -twas soooo sweet to effortlessly pull a big heavy car up a kerb.

How to replace drag link ball joint, the stupid expensive way D'oh.


Recently I was purchasing some genuine power steering fluid from the dealership when I stupidly asked "How much for a drag link ball joint?".
I was totally shocked when the parts guy said $35bux for genuine and I can have it here in 2 hours, Hmmm I was planing on a drag link flip and other Poly Performance parts - what to do???? - As I was driving the black Pearl (Pirate ship or Pile of ship LoL) all over the road and death wobble was getting closer and closer I decided to get the ball joint as a temporary measure, 2 hours latter I returned to pick up my new BJ, paid for it and as I was leaving the store I noticed I had been charged $135Bux D'oh D'oh D'oh.


1. Go and buy a ball joint separator $25 - the BJ's are tight as, and I don't think it is doable without one.


2. Turn your steering wheel to almost full lock left - this will give good access to the lock nut.


3. Using a 21mm spanner or socket undo the nut on top of the BJ, if it starts to slip you can put an allen key into the top of the BJ to stop slippage. take the nut off.


4.use your new ball joint separator - again I had use it like I planned to break it (same as my steering pitman arm remover) to remove the BJ


5. To save yourself a wheel alignment - well at least the pain of getting your steering wheel straight again - which is vital to the operation of the computer stability cr@p (I managed to avoid one) hold the drag link against the tie rod and mark the tie rod with a line or scratch so you can install the new BJ at exactly the same distance as the old one.


6. twist out the old Ball joint and screw in the new one :) align the mark you made on the diff, insert the new BJ into the pitman arm and tighten the nut on top, if you are as lucky as I was when you test drive your jeep the steering wheel should still point straight :)

hahaha great... wanna do a cheap drag link flip. order a LH drive drag link when you go to fit it you will notice the ball joint will be on top of the knuckle at the wheel. got the idea from a US site the guy used a RHD drag link to do a LHD drag link flip

Hi Guyz


I bought a second hand pair of Mirror relocation brackets so I could relocate my mirrors permanently to the window pillar - I wanted to interchange my full doors with my bar doors and not have to worry about mirrors.


Problem
After I installed the relocation brackets I discovered that I could not see the passenger side mirror.....WTF - the dash was in the way. What a Joke.. a very nicely made relocation Kit was useless D'oh!


Solution 1 - (bad idea)
I bought some little sports car style mirrors and bolted them to my bar doors, not a very useful solution - really only made my Jeep legal. WAFTAM.


Solution 2 - (Much Better)
I bought a pair of TJ mirrors (Ebay) and bolted them to my relocation brackets, successfully allowing me position the mirrors in a place where I could see them - Imagine that LoL.


I am now very happy - can see nicely behind me on both sides :) cheers Hunty

Tiny little things aren't they when you put them in places like that....lol. well in compared to those on the doors.

As for registered Jeep at Jambo - at least as many as you. Maybe 2 if finances allow.

As for Stickers I've 750 of them sitting here next to right now ready to go. Bahahahahahahahahahahaha.

As you can see from the video - My factory located after market Dampner got in the way - I have tried various relocation brackets - some excellent some not so - I probably should have gone with Poly b4 I welded stainless steel plates to my pan hard / track bar mounts.


Anyway.... I have relocated it top nice and high- it seems to be clear of everything, I spent a couple of hours at Wooders this arvo on the travel ramp putting it through its paces


It seems pretty good to drive I guess time will tell :)

This is one the best things I have ever done to my JK :)


Its quite a technical mod, so be sure to have a few mates around who can help you, infact this one is so tricky you may even need to phone a friend.


I got mine from Wooders Garage for a lot less than they sell for on Ebay USA + Postage.


What a huge difference to driver & passenger comfort - I highly recommend this little mod , cheers Hunty

Simple but effective! I've had one in for about 18 months now. Was getting a bad back when I was driving and found it was because I was leaning over to rest my arm on the centre arm rest. Got one of these to raise it up and hey presto.....no more back ache.

To be honest it was that long ago that I can't remember (clearly not just the back that isn't working properly!). Definitely something that should be included as standard though as it's so much more comfortable. The only down side is it's weight. I'm always cautious when leaving the open the lid open as it feels like the extra weight of the armrest could quite easily rip the fixing screws out of the flimsy plastic that they are screwed in to. Not sure why they needed such a heavy duty metal bracket. Could have been far thinner metal or even plastic as there is no force applied to it. Still, at least you know it isn't going to break.

I pressed the remote lock button the other day an noticed that the drivers side front blinker repeater didn't flash (the blinker on the fender).


I am MAN, I have no need for the owners manual or instructions. LoL


I reached up under the fender pulled and twisted and viola the blinker came out easily - kinda the same as the blinker in the front grill twist and pull.


I had just the previous week changed a brake light globe and discovered that Jeep has made the globe part of the plastic plug requiring a more expensive bulb replacement.


So I now have the plug and globe free from my Jeep I went into Pacific spares at Waitara and asked if they had one - of course they didn't so I was just about to leave and go to Jeep when one of their genius's suggested I unplug the globe from the plastic housing plug - pitty I didn't think of that B4 I unplugged it from my Jeep - so I bought 2 @$2bux each and then What a PITA


Because it took me 30min to reconnect it - I felt like such a retard - how hard could it be to reconnect a simple 2 pin plug - I cleaned it checked it etc dozens of times and finally got it back together.


What have I learnt -
1. twist out the globe carrier
2. leave it connected
3. replace the glass globe
4. twist it back in
it should have taken 2 min tops from go to woe instead it took me over 30min
Globe cost = $2.00

had that same globe go a few months ago, Hunty. Fortunately, I did not know of the removable plug & just pulled the globe out. The brake globes are moulded into the base!? Bugger! (I'd call that time to update to LED tail lights! (But not the US ones...))

I have been death wobble adjacent now for several months, had a couple of episodes of DW & It has really pi$$3d me off. I guess because I was struggling to identify the cause and have recently replaced my upper and lower ball joints'


I have stainless steel plates welded to my track bar mounts and new larger shanked bolts to ensure no play or slop their.


I have recently replaced the drag link ball joint at the pitman arm end and have also recently had my power steering rebuilt.


all that was left (in my dumb@$$ opinion) was the ball joints on the tie rod and the lower ball joint on the drag link - to me the tie rod looked and felt OK and I borrowed a lower ball joint and long arm from a mate - still no solution D'oh.


I just moved house and in the move I found my stethoscope so I began to listen to the ball joints whilst my beautiful wife rocked the steering wheel for me and voila - with the use of a stethoscope I could identify the ball joint on the lower end of the drag link to be faulty (yes the borrowed one was as bad as mine D'oh).


Rang the stealership and asked how much for the long arm end of the drag link and that was a real heart starter.


So I decided to get it rebuilt, they, using some kind of mill / cnc machine opened it up from behind and replaced everything - repacked it and welded it up. for a fraction of the cost. So for know I am DW free :)

I had a blast today helping to build the Jambo onsite test track


The Video's show my JK trying to get over an A grade section of the track.


As you can see my B grade Jeep JK really struggles to get over the logs ( no surprises, because its on 33's not 37's :)
However we all agreed if a JK on 33's can make it its not A grade so next weekend we will toughen it up a little more to ensure only the toughest A greaders Jeeps can pass!


The track is coming along nicely, if you and your Jeep have what it takes then register today for Jambo - it promises to be a great Jeepin event :)

Last minute Jambo Prep
Jambo 2012 is nearly here - ticket sales end soon (15th) so hurry up PeEpS get you Jambo on ASAP.


I plan to run with the roof off and bar doors, Yes I could just release the heat from satan's sauna but even with the worlds hottest air pouring out from the 4 vents of death is not enough heat with the roof off @ 110kph to keep my beautiful wife warm so I decided to add heated seats - turned out to be very quick & easy.


1. unbolted the front seats 4 bolts and on the drivers side unplug the seatbelt warning plug.
2. removed my seat covers and stuck the heating pads with the included double sided tape
3. made hole in the centre console
4. wired it all up
5. enjoy driving & toasting my @ss off topless LoL

I finally managed to win a 52inch led light bar off ebay for a good price


1. I wanted plenty of flood light to aid in nightime wheelin
2. I also wanted a really wide spread of light to spot Roo's, Wombats and other night time creatures
3. wanted to use less 12v power to light up - my current hallelujah lights 5x120watt use 600w or 50 amps, I know my Jk has a huge std alternator but still happy to be using less electrickery.




My 2 cents
I have been very sceptical re the usefullness of led's vs Hids & Tungsten globes and have not been convinced yet by any demo I have seen.
Even know I own a mean SOB 52inch 96x3watt led bar I still think my old hallelujah lights had more penetration.


I luv the led bar because
1. Sooooo much wide flood light
2. sooooo even - there are NO holes/gaps its wall to wall light and I luv that :)
3. Less power consumption :)
4. I luv all the light that shines up really high up into the tree tops (yes I know that its no use for driving but it really adds to touring pleasure).
5. my cheap @ss old hallelujah lights needed tlc and realigning and globes and sometimes faulty earths etc - glad to be rid of them.


Overall I am glad I switched, extremely glad I didn't drop $2k on led 3 years ago when they first came out :)


The little vid shows me driving home into my driveway just b4 sunset - I flicked on the high beam and was pleasantly surprised when I light the house light chevy chase, i shot the vid with my iPhone and you can see for a second before it has time to adjust the exposure how much light there is.


Thats 1 more job of the Jambo prep list


Finally these lights are a real PITA to install, the allen keyed screws that change the angle are not accessible at all! - you have to unbolt the lights from your Jeep and remove the bracket that bolts them to your Jeep just to focus them - having said that they are extremely well made and when all adjusted and locked up the sit very well on my Jeep

Just after I bought my JK I had the doors off whilst camping and it started to rain , so I through the doors back on (without connecting the retraining strap) BIG MISTAKE D'oh. next morning my nephew opened the passenger door, the wind caught it and #$%*$ me my JK had a dimple, it has annoyed me now for years, had a chance this morning to get it repaired cheap whilst a mates new i30 was getting 3 door dings removed - finally I can look at my passenger side without getting p!$$#@ off.


I highly recommend Paul from the ding guys - his work is faultless

Hi Guyz
Had another great day out with the SJC, we sat around for a while trying to decide if the 3meter step up and "Can opener" were doable, apparently Yes it is.


I didn't use my ARB Lockers - not trying to prove anything just forgot to hit the button, it was quite a sphincter moment, the approach to such a steep climb, pitty the vids never look like you feel when you are pointing at the sky and have 1 or 2 wheels off the ground :)

Just after I bought my JK I had the doors off whilst camping and it started to rain , so I through the doors back on (without connecting the retraining strap) BIG MISTAKE D'oh. next morning my nephew opened the passenger door, the wind caught it and #$%*$ me my JK had a dimple, it has annoyed me now for years, had a chance this morning to get it repaired cheap whilst a mates new i30 was getting 3 door dings removed - finally I can look at my passenger side without getting p!$$#@ off.

For anyone else with dipple, get a hair dryer heat that pannel up for 2-3 mins or until hot and buy a can off compressed air from repco super cheap etc spray some of that over the dent, you may have to repeat a few time but by heating and cooling quickly it will pop the dent out. This is how I fix drivers side now I have one on the passenger side

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the trails, every Toyota was stranded, their progress like snails. They had no shovels, no rope and no winch, no CB, no cell-phone, To get out of their pinch. When out from a mud pit, there arose such a clatter; all the 'wheelers came running to see what was the matter. I saw some poor Toyota All covered in crud; he had blown his motor trying to get free of the mud. As he stood there I noticed His glowing red face, and I knew in an instant He wanted out of this place.

I glanced at his roof, it was all I could see; he pleaded for help from my winch and from me. So I sprang to the front of my trusty old toy, spooled out the winch cable, and said: "Hook 'er up, boy!" He went for a swim in the watery hell, and I laughed as he turned brown, and started to smell. He hooked up the cable to his buried front hook, I put a coat on the line like it says in the book. I winched him out quickly, A very fast session; and, I charged him a C-note, to teach him a lesson. I then drove my Jeep through the same mud and same muck; no problem for me, 'cause I had a REAL truck! I wound down my window as I drove out of sight, and smugly yelled, "Next time Stay home Christmas night!"2003

After seeing my JK lying useless in the drive for too long and 2 Weeks of the internet equivalent of dumpster diving searching for clues as to why my JK cranks and fails to start has led me to discover that inside the fuse box is the TIPM Total integrated POS, I mean Power manager, from what i can see from pictures on the internet the TIPM contains a bunch of computer smarts and a bunch of relays, and mine is not working as it should.


In my search to fix my JK I systematically fumbled over the following


1. Checked for spark - pulled a HT lead off and connected it to an old spark plug
rested it on the block and cranked - I gotz spark.


2. Checked the CPS Crank position sensor - attached a obd2 tester cranked the car and got a fairly regular 250rpm reading during crank - confirming CPS


3. Checked for fuel (had a full tank) crawled under the drives side of the car and turned the key (I have very long gorilla like arms LoL) could not hear the pump running.


4. Checked the fuel pump yellow 20A fuse and it was good, applied the meter to the test point on top of the fuse and with the ignition on there was no 12+ present - my conclusion - the relay inside the TIPM was faulty


5. Rang jeep and asked "how much for a new TIMP?" they said none in stock and $815.00 D'oh


6. went on to Ebay - $200bux - BUT no guarantee that the USA TIPM will work here AND possible requirement to visit the dealer to have it custom programmed to my JK $500.00


7. Rang a few auto parts dismantlers (Wreckers) and got offered ones out of water damaged JK's for between $400 - $500 depending on Km's


NOT HAPPY JAN!


I got some good intel from my mate wikiGeoff, he let me know which of the 7 million connectors under the fuse box contained the wiring that fed the fuel pump - I unplugged it and started poking around for the blue wire with orange trace - another brilliant piece of info from wikiGeoff. anyway all the big cable looms were too short for me to do anything with so I reassembled the fuse box / TIPM and went under the JK.


Directly under are where the driver puts feet there is 20 - 30cm of wiring loom on its way to the petrol tank - i carefully split it apart and searched for the blue wire with orange trace, stripped it back and twisted a temporary wire to it and ran that directly back to the battery12v+


Cranked the engine and it started immediately.


I now had confirmed my theory that the relay in the TIPM was stuffed


I went to my Fav Auto electrician and bought a relay, 4meters of high quality automotive double insulated wire, 2x 20amp yellow fuses, 4 spade connectors and a prewired fuse.


I cut one of the fuses in half - to use it to plug into 12v ignition on power inside the fuse box, soldered a wire to it and connected to the relay 12+ trigger


as you can see in the pics below there is a good place to tap off 12v+ inside the fuse bow


Heres my temporary fix
Feed Ignition on power to a relay and supply the fuel pump directly, bypassing the TIPM,
It works just great - my Jeep starts and runs fine.


Heres the problem - in the event of a roll over or serious accident my computer cannot shut off the fuel pump - the only way to shut my pump off now is to turn off the ignition.


My plan now is to find a good deal on TIPM swap it into my JK have Jeep flash the info into it and pull my TIPM apart and discover which relay is dead and find a equivalent replacement relay, solder it in and post up a true budget cure


If anyone knows somebody with a wrecked 07 petrol JK in their back yard and would be happy to loan the Fuse box / TIPM to me for a while I will fix my TIPM and post up what relay to buy and where to get it :)

I've suggested just adding a rollover/impact cut off switch....that way if the tipm does cut out in a more remote area, then at least the motor will still work.

So about the same as any TJ/XJ or other electric pump vehicle produced between 1980 about 2007 ;)

I just bought one of these off ebay
Its out of a Ford Mustang and should activate upside down and at 8gs or above which equates to about a 60kph crash in a jeep (I think)

Cruise control not working?
Airbag light and chime driving you crazy?


You most likely have a worn / broken clock spring!


Step 1
Buy a new CS from Amazon, Ebay or wherever. I got mine from Amazon for fraction of Jeep AU price.


Step 2
Straighten the steering wheel.
Disconnect the battery, I did because I absolutely did not want to accidentally set off the airbag - didnt fancy a screwdriver in my forehead, some may say it would be an improvement LoL
The only tools you will need are
a long T20 torx driver,
philips head screw driver
bend yourself a special flat blade screw driver
Socket, ext and driver - to loosen the nut behind the wheel - Not the Jeep enthusiast LoL


Step 3
Remove the plastic panels around the steering column by removing the 3x T20 screws (underneath the wheel, 1 is silver and visible and 2 black ones are hidden)


Step 4
Remove the Horn button / Drivers airbag
by using the bent screwdriver to gently pry / lever off the cast steering wheel hub 3x U shaped spring clips (they remain attached to the Airbag / Horn - when you spring the 3rd one be ready to catch the Airbag / horn and unplug it.


Step 5
Disconnect the white plug at TDC and remove the centre bolt that holds the steering wheel. Pull the wheel off - I didnt use a puller (some say I have expert pulling skills) just a big grunt LoL


Step 6
Remove the blinker stalk by removing 1x Philips head screw (on the left side) and unplug it.


Step 7
Remove the Headlight stalk, 1 x Philips screw (on the right side) and unplug.


Step 8
Remove all the plugs from the old CS.


Step 9
Remove the 2 silver torx behind the old CS and 1 silver torx screw near the IGnition Key Hole and gently pull off the old Clock Spring.


Step 10
Replace CS with new one - leave the yellow CS lock in place until you have put the steering wheel back on and tightened the centre bolt.


I hope you guys find this useful and it saves you some cash

Had a blast on the weekend wheelin with Greg @ Forster - plenty of awesome trails in the forests - definitely need to organise a SJC weekend camping trip to the mid north coast

Put the hard top into storage don't plan to use it again but am keeping just in case I change my mind or get an inner city apartment with non secure parking.


Changed my bull bars mounting arrangement and gained a few more inches of frontal clearance - set the bar behind the sub frame mounts as opposed to in front of them.


Bought some bar doors from Wooders - they give an excellent view of the trails while wheelin - some of the best money I have ever spent on my heap!


Grabbed a bikini top of ebay $50 keep my cr@p white boy skin from melting! lol

Sway bar disconnects, front shock relocation brackets to stop the shocks rubbing at full flex and reinforced the front axel C's - my heap looks like I had the front axel pressed to gain more negative camber - it seems to have stopped bending now!
Jammed 4 cans of coopers (I can't beleive its not beer lol) fake beer under my heap to prove that it is actually lifted! lol - still looks too low to me.

I trawled the net to find a good place to mount my ARB Compressor and I have seen some really creative uses of space including under the bonnet, in behind the rear tail light, under the floor near the fuel pump and under the drivers or passenger seat, I am quite surprised just how HOT the pump gets - I would say the heat was extreme - I certainly cannot touch the pump after only filling 1x 33' mtz from 12 - 32psi - given this crazy amount of heat the ARB pump generates I rulled out under the bonnet and in behind the rear tail light and perhaps even under the seats! - plus the real-estate inside my 2dr is very expensive and i do not wish to use the under seat area for a compressor plus I would worry about the heat that would build up and maybe cause a fire!


So after much searching I decided to use the space inside my spare tyre!
here's the write up I did.
1. - install 40amp auto circuit breaker close to the battery
2. - remove spare wheel
3. - run cables in behind rear door trim
4. - install 40amp relay in behind 3rd brake light
5. - install on off switch
6. - Mount compressor
7. - Connect all wires and reinstall spare wheel
Enjoy using your compressor with lots of natural airflow!

Who could believ 1 little red switch could bring such pleasure - I di dthe crazynuts mod


A long long time ago (sep 09) I was wheelin on Fraser island in high 2 running along at 80kmh the legal speed limit on the island - I was driving with some Toymota's & Missuns -and went over a gentle little sand mound -the car lunged a little and then the stupid Jeep JK took some of my accelerator and then started to apply the brakes - 20sec latter I was in 1st gear trying to build up some momentum again this happened repeatedly and seriously pissed me off - so I tried 4x4 high same thing happened - so I tried holding the esp button for 7 sec to try and disable the annoying stop and go slow bloody useless @$#%#@& JK computer - this worked well untill i hit 40kmh and the @#$%$#@ thing cut back in and continued to piss me off!!! so I tried 4x4 low range with the 7sec esp button application and I was away again following my mates - im now driving @ 75kmh in low range 6th - great!!! the tacho was in the 3000 - 4000 range - so what I thought - well 10 min latter I looked at the fuel gauge and I swear i could see it moving - so I interigated the l/100 and discovered to my pain that the normal 10 - 13.5l/100 I normally get was steadily climbing and after only 10min @ 75 in low 4x4 6th the gauge read 18.5 - ouch!!!! so wtf was i to do - fuel is about $2.00 litre on Fraser!
The next time i was on Sand - i was on stockton beach - i needed to snatch a friend in his disco - heres what happened - I connected the strap backed up to his bumper and hit it hard - the disabled disco (poor useless v8 had died from heat exhaustion) was instantly plucked out so i decided to try and pull him off the beach and back to the road - so as not to incur a huge towing charge to recover his vehicle - well you guessed it first sign of wheel spin and I got brakes and throttle cut - thanx very little Jeep JK!!!!!!!!!
last but not least I was driving up to the freeway from gosford (winding uphill road) and some fool in a gas barby powered nissun overtakes me - so given my aussie red blood and stubborn jeep pride I decided he was not going to just pass me in 1 of the corners so I booted it and you guessed it - the yellow light of death flashed a few times on the dash & the stupid jeep jk computer was getting scared - i think the g force calculator / sensor $4!t$ itself above 50kmh - anyway as i watched the nissans rear end disappear i could only think of what could have been if the @#$#@# thing would just $#@#$ off!! and let ME DRIVE MY CAR!!!!!!!!!! - (ok - im calming down now)
alright let me get to the point
I fitted a red light / switch to my dash and wired it up according the Great "Crazy nuts" post on how to deal with the esp bas erm & abs - and now i am sooooooo happy

I can now wheel as hard as I like and if I choose to - I can stop the JK's computers messing with my ride!

I finally got around to installing my CB (cut the cables ties that were holding it onto the top of the dash LoL)
I have looked and looked for a CB with a remote control on the Mic that I could bury behind the dash but alas I could not find 1 that would do both the old 27Meg & UHF - I really get a lot of valuable highway information from the truckers country folk that still use 27Meg - so I decided to see if I could cut my Uniden 95sx dual band (UHF & 27meg) into the top of the panel.


Step 1 Mark it out carefully - LoL
Step 2 Remove the top by prying of the top plastic cover - rear first!
Step 3 Remove - unplug the Compass / direction sensor
Step 4 Using a sharp knife carefully cut out the top of the stereo
Step 5 Same Knife - cut the plastic top
Step 6 Test fit
Step 7 reconnect compass / direction sensor

I wanted to add some switches to control;
Winch master power
Rear work Light
Arb Compressor
Front Spotlights
Map Lights
Fridge
CB GPS etc
I decided to install the daystar 4 rocker switch panel but I still wanted more switches - so on a recent SJC trip to the watagans I saw inside the trip leaders JK and noticed he had a nice commercial box installed above his mirror - that gave ma an idea - so (I'm guessing for a fraction of the cost)
I bought a second Daystar panel ($40 off Ebay USA including the switches fitted) and cut it down to fit the space above my mirror
Step 1 - Carefully measure the top panel and cut out a hole to install the daystar
Step 2 - cut down the daystar panel - as per pic
Step 3 - Test fit
Step 4 - Complete the wiring

I finally decided to give my JK some cool clean air to breath so I jumped onto Ebay and bought the "direct4x4accessories" fed through the top of the bonnet edition - delivered for under $300 plus they gave me a free tactical police style led torch!


I was very nervous about cutting into my beautiful JK body to install this so I applied the old adage "measure twice & cut once" - even still I was $hitting myself when I began to drill.


The instructions that came were very good! so I will just add my 2cents and hopefully anybody who reads this will benefit a little bit from my stress LoL


I held the Snorkel in place against my Jeep just to see how it looked and to discover if my light bar would get in the way - and I soon realised not only it would get in the way but also my Mirror relocation brackets would also!


So the mirror relocation brackets are up for sale $50 and there yours - (just pm me).


I started early this morning and the bonnet was still a little wet - which was good because when I laid the supplied template on the bonnet it immediately stuck!


The instructions said to lay it (the template) 19mm from the indent made for the hood latch - but I (stupidly) did not trust this - so I went to great lengths to move the template around until I thought it was in the perfect position wasted about 30min doing this and after I had finally placed it where I thought it looked best - i measured it to see how far different I had it compared to the instructions and %uck me it was exactly 19mm from the latch LoL LoL.


I then got my pocket knife and traced out the template pushing just hard enough to scratch my Jeeps bonnet - see picture - I also centre punched the jeep for the hole saw!


Next I cut the holes - and yes people I know I used a wood hole saw D'oh! its all I had!


I went to bunnings and bought an angle grinder and very thin cutting disc - both on special cost less than $20 for both!


Tip 1 I removed the bonnet insulation so I could see what I was cutting into - it was quite easy - just carefully prise off the 3 stupid plastic christmas tree type fasteners.


TIP 2 when cutting with the angle grinder the steel of the bonnet will get very hot so I chose to cut with the garden hose running water onto the bonnet to keep it cool and prevent the paint from melting! - which I can assure you will if you don't keep it cool and then there will be tears LoL


I assembled the snorkel and attached all the mounting hardware - sealed it all with heaps of black silicon type stuff - also from bunnings


Lastly I riveted the supplied trim to the bonnet to finish off the job


Best of all - I have been driving around Sydney this morning for work and
I noticed on my scan gauge that the air temperature flowing into my engine was around 29 degrees C - the abient temp in Sydney at the time was 26C - which got me a barred up because I normally observe the air temp going into my engine any where from double the ambient to 86 - 90 degrees C !!!!!!!!!!!!


So if any of you have any smarts when it comes to the fuel efficiency of colder more dense air - I would certainly like to know if I can expect better performance and or better economy? now my engine is sucking down air thats at least 50C cooler


Lastly as you can see from the pix I need to make up 2 little black spacers for the windscreen pillar mount to keep the snorkel of my light bar - I just used 2 packets of washers this morning - so technically its still a work in progress!

I threw a big end bearing 9,000km's ago and Jeep rebuilt my engine under warranty - I suspected it was an oil pressure / feed prob but the guys at Jeep service didnt - so less than 1000km's later threw another big end bearing - thankfully Jeep gave me another short motor and this time fixed the oil problem! under warranty !!!!!!!


So I decided at the very least I should keep an eye on the oil pressure!


1. spent too long looking around under the JK bonnet for the sender.
2. Gave up because;


a) - didnt want to disconnect the factory sender. - do want to get any factory alarms
b) - didnt want to put a Tpiece on the factory sender - wouldnt fit either.


3. looked on ebay for a sandwich plate adapter $20

4. simple install - just remove the oil filter and screw the adapter in
5. connect up gauge in cab! - too easy LoL


Added bonus - the sandwich plate adapter has 2 spare connectors - so in future if i wish i can add another oil cooler!

Hey all
as those of you with JK's know all to well , Satans sauna resides under most of our bonnets!


Whilst I was installing my snorkel the sleeve of my T-shirt got caught on one of the little clips that holds the radiator over flow pipe and with virtually no force at all it snapped off!
Upon investigation I discovered that the plastic is extremely brittle - and I put that down to the fact that it is @#$%'n hot under there!


Solution
$1.00 bonnet scoop (Ebay of course) + postage :(


As some of you already know I installed my snorkel and after you have made one giant hole in the bonnet a second smaller one isn't that scary! LoL - ok yes it is - I think I will always $hit myself when I attack my beautiful Jeep with an angle grinder


1. Mark out a suitable area - I decided that just behind the bonnet re in-forcing - ie between the strap attachment point and the windscreen water jet would be overall the best place - I certainly was not going to cut into the bonnet sub frame!


2. Using a very thin disc cut out the desired area - be very carefull when cutting with a disc as the heat build up will melt your bonnet paint - i ran a hose on the bonnet whilst I cut to dissipate the heat


3. Good luck trying to find the centre of the bonnet - I guessed it with my eye - it looked wrong - I measured it with a tape - still looked wrong - I think its because the rubber windscreen stoppers are not exactly in the centre of the water jet or?????
anyway I just threw 2 "L" plates on the bonnet and peeled off the double sided tape backing and with my fingers crossed and a prayer dropped the scoop on the bonnet!


4. in hind sight - I should have spray painted the scoop first - I originally thought why bother painting a black plastic scoop on a black plastic Jeep LoL

I have just pulled it off and turned it around, apparently the windscreen creates a high pressure system just above the cabin air intake that makes the reverse scoop idea DUMB! - However the heat will still rise up and out when wheelin in 4x4 Low and I can get a heap more air under the hood at speed - well thats my theory and I'm sticking with it

Another Mod that really made a huge difference - I picked the rancho's up cheap from the AJOR classifieds and could not be happier! - if i want to run like a pensioner and float on a cloud I select setting 1 .
If I want to go hard on the tar or I load it up with fat @sses, rooftop tent and trailer I turn em up to 4 or 5 for a really nice tight ride.


I added the shock relocation brackets to ensure the shocks didnt hit the chasis!


So this is what I learnt whilst installing the Ranchos


1. They don't fit out of the box & clash with the rear sway bar.
2. They are awesome - have improved my ride outta sight!
3. its a relatively easy adjustment / fix to make them fit.


The front Ranchos installed easily and fitted very well but the rear Ranchos ext reservoir outlet / connection was positioned exactly on top of the sway bar and if installed as is & without modification would definitely get broken off first time out wheelin.


I am sure there are many solutions however the one I chose not only makes space for the ranchos but also gives a little help to the rear sway bar.


I added a small block to lower the the sway bar mount on both sides and now there is ample clearance


I hope this info is useful to those of you with JK's and Adjustable Rancho's with Ext reservoirs

Hi Guyz
I finally got around to completing a project that has been in my head for years; turn my front bar into an air tank so I can run a rattle gun whilst out wheelin on a tough trail!


I installed my ARB compressor in behind my spare wheel - mainly because under the bonnet of my JK the temperature reaches that of Satans BBQ!


I then welded up the ends of my front bar to make it Air tight - drilled and tapped a brass drain plug and installed a quick release air outlet with non return valve.


I wanted to know the pressure so I added a PSI gauge to the right of my steering wheel.


Finally today I charged it up to 100psi (recommended by the manufacturer of my rattle gun) and attempted to get 1 of the wheel studs off that had been rattled on by an intellectually challenged tyre monkey! LoL - so tight that I bent my wheel brace trying to loosen it!


I hope you enjoy the write up as much as I will enjoy having my rattle gun on the trails

I have recently added 5 more 100w lights to my JK and was wondering how my alternator was coping, I also wanted to know just how much strain my winch was placing on my Alternator, battery and electrical system at different levels of Pull!


I now have 900w of light (Hi Beam) and according to my new Ammeter I am using 61amps out of a total of 160 (yes I got lucky and my jeep has a 160amp alternator)


To save you all the pain I went through - heres a couple of tips
1. buy a ammeter and shunt that reads up to 500Amps
2. if you buy off Ebay as I did and they don't supply any instructions or wiring diags then pls only connect the shunt between the battery neg and the jeep - eg disconnect the black wire from the battery and insert the shunt!
3.be very careful to connect the sensor wires to the shunt with the correct polarity - if you don't you will need to buy a replacement Ammeter with a few seconds!


Warning - Science content - What is a shunt - well it is a device with a tiny amount of resistance (75ma) so if you connect a load - (in my case 900w of light) to a battery and you connect through a shunt the voltage that you can read at the battery will be (if the battery is full) 13.8v and if you measure the voltage after it has gone through the shunt it will be approx .006v less - this tiny discrepancy is translated by the ammeter and displayed (in my case) as 61amps. - sorry for the science content Jeepers - LoL - but i'm sure at least 1 person wants to now!


I now it takes approx 250amps to pull a 3.5ton Patrol up a steep hill skidding and bellied out scrapping all the way up!

Hi Guyz
I am loving my new tyre dogs - Pressure & Temperature monitoring (realtime)


I added the monitors to hopefully save destroying an expensive tyre or two whilst wheelin - I have programmed the monitors for on road and off road;


On road the low pressure alarm is set to activate when a tyre falls below 30psi and I usually run between 32 & 35psi


Off road I set the alarm to a couple of psi below my aired down pressure ; if I am on sand and am running 12psi I set the alarm to 10psi


Hopefully this will allow me time to pull over and fix a leak before I have chance to shred them driving on a flat tyre - as all of you know its hard sometimes to know when you have a flat especially if you are in MUD!


I bought the tyre dogs that screw onto the valve stem - dumb@ss I hear some of you saying already (Yom- LoL).


Why;
1. I wanted to be able to remove them and use them on hire vehicles.


2. They are coded to the wheel position so if (and I always do at half way) I changed the front tyres to the back - didnt want to have to break the tyre bead. just to relocate the monitors.


3. I often tow a trailer and will take the front 2 off and put on the trailer when towing - as you all know when the trailer starts to feel a little soft / bungee to tow its too late - tyre already shreaded.


Tip
When I screwed them onto the valve they protruded past the sidewall of the tyre - this was clearly going to be a bad idea for serious wheelin so I took another handful of smart@ss pills and modified my rims!


I found a wheel mod friendly tyre store and had them remove my tyres and drill 4 additional valve stem sized holes and installed 4 extra valve stems - 1 in each rim! as close to the centre of the rim and as far as possible away wheelin danger.


Bonus
Not having to remove them & replace them everytime I wanted to Air Down & Air Up
I can now air up with the Mrs comfortable in the car with aircon on - all she has to do is toot the horn when the tyres are back to road pressure - I don't have to continuously check the pressure - can do other things like reconnect my sway bars, wipe mud from lights and number plates etc

Finally got rid of the 3.21's - which made my heap quite sluggish when I ran 35's
so I changed to 4.56's and ARB air leakers even though I currently run 33's MTZ's I like the 4.56's it gives me quite a good low 1st gear when rock hopping + their is still the smallest chance that one day I can get engineered on 35's

The drawers really make touring in the 2dr JK much more pleasant - I made really big drawers - they filled up the entire TUB - plenty big enough for the Mrs & I to pack everything we needed for a 10,000km road trip into central OZ


A carpenter I am not! so I will not bore you with a dumbass how to. (especially as I have no idea anyway! LoL - lots of wood, screws and liquid nails!)


I will however point out a couple of "Jeep Thangs"


1. - the rear floor is not flat or level
2. - the rear seat mounts in the floor are not (in mine anyway) centered
3. - the tub, dont what else to call it (in mine anyway) is not square!


I got out a huge hammer to flatten the little metal tabs that the removable fiber/plastic storage cover slots into.


I have made a little access hole in order to utilise the small lower storage are.


Still to come (and I havent figured out the best way to do it yet) is some kind of Piano hinge on the front end - behind the driver and passenger seat to allow me to access the 2 large extra storage areas in front of the wheel arches.


Yes I made my drawers BIG! - i wanted to use all the available space in the back of my huge 2dr JK LoL - i didnt even use sliders because I wanted to maximise the space available for the drawers! - to ensure they slide I used 17mm 6 ply with the hard shinny finish and coated them with silicone!


I relocated the sub to behind the drivers seat - it fits in there comfortably and gives better bass in the front!


Covered it all in marine grey carpet and it looks like a bought 1!

I set my rig up to do the Cape with the SJC and took it out to Uluru as a test - It tours really well - very comfortable.

This is perhaps my best mod ever!!!!


What the hell were Chrysler thinking!!! - who on earth wants to listen to that annoying chime just because they have opened their drivers door! or they want to slowly winch up a steep hill covered in mud and don't want to wear or dirty up their seat belt (especially if its a daily drive) (please always wear your seat belt because if you don't and your airbag goes off it will probably kill you!)


This mod will give you a switch to decide if you want your Jeep JK factory or quiet!


The only downside to this mod is - if you silence the chime you also disable the interior light sensor -(only on the drivers side) the light will still come on from the light control on the steering column and the passenger door!


What you need
1. Scotch Lock 25c
2. Red switch - Jaycar $2.95c
3. small piece of wire and some electrical tape.
4. Peace and Quiet - priceless!


Tools
1. philips head screw driver for the 4 screws in the door
2. allen Key for the hex head inside the door release
3. wire stripper and Soldering iron / solder


Step 1
Remove inside door skin - remove 4 screws and 1 hex head bolt
gently pry off the trim starting from the bottom of the door - just pull and you will hear the plastic locks popping of 1 at a time - go slow and and after you have released the bottom of the skin lift the door skin up to clear the bottom of the window lip - carefully remove the plug to the central locking switch.


Step 2
cut the purple wire - sorry the photo is little blurred


Step 3
drill hole for switch - any where you like! - theres plenty of options re space for a switch!


Step 4
insert and wire up switch to purple wire.


Step 5
replace door trim.


Step 6
clamp scotch lock onto green and black seatbelt sensor wires under drivers seat.


Step 7
Brag to your friends that you can open your drivers door and not have to put up with the endless annoying chime and the stereo stays on - you can go 4x4 wheelin with your seat belt off and not have to listen to the annoying chime - please always wear your seat belt because if you don't and your airbag goes off it will probably kill you! or at least break your neck! :(

Hi Guyz
I woke up sunday morning and all was well, Bathurst 1000 on the TV, a perfect day brewing until - I had a great idea - why not install a switch inside my Jeep to run my winch!


So I took a fistful of smarta$$ pills and begun!


I decided I wanted to keep the original SmittyX wired remote and add a wireless transmitter / receiver and a switch inside the cab near the steering wheel.
After much sitting around and watching the great race I realised that I really should install some kind of hidden switch to disable the winch so when I park it with the roof off people will not be able to reach into my cab press the winch out button and easily rip off my dyneema rope (which I keep tightly spooled onto the winch - so tight in fact that the mechanical free spool release can't be operated until some slack is created by pressing the winch out button for a few seconds.


I grabbed another handful of smarta$$ pills and realised immediately that if someone with a smittyX wired remote control really wanted my dyneema rope they could just plug their winch control into my winch and spool it all out - so I needed a master lockout switch preferably in the cab and preferably with a key


finally I got motivated to do it and thought what if someone sitting inside the cab (baby sitting the steering wheel and brakes) were to press the winch out button whilst I was outside the cab overseeing the winching and pressing the winch in button on the smittyX remote or the wirelss transmitter "would the winch blow up in spectacular fashion??? (If you know what happens please post up) - a lockout of some sort needed to be engineered!

I went to the wreckers because I knew that car window switches have a lockout system built in to stop dad in the front and little johnny in the back both pressing opposites (up & down simultaneously) and blowing up the window winder


I wanted a slimline switch - i had seen other JK Jeeps with Arb switches mounted in the A pillar and wanted to try to get a little more subtle installation so I found a nice (LoL) SSangyong Musso 4x4 at pick a part and extracted its rear window switch.


Holdens still leading so I got bored with the race and started to sketch possible circuit diagrams (as per pic lol) and realised that I would need at least 2 relays to ensure fool proof lockout


Final tally
1. Wired remote
2. Wireless remote
3. Incab switch
4. Master lock with key switch
5. electrical lockout system inc 2 x 12v relays with N/O N/C contacts
6. Hookup wire
7. Fuse holder and fuse
8. Convoluted plastic split tube to protect wire going from Cab to winch
9. 3 way selector switch - Jaycar i off ii
10. 2 more boxes of smarta$$ pills - because this became a real noodle scratcher


Step 1
cut in switches - i preffer to use a piece of cardboard and cut a hole with a stanley knife and test fit my switches in the cardboard first - when I get the perfect fit I trace the hole onto the A pillar and then cut with a sharp knife and file with a metal file to get the hole as perfect as I can!


Step 2
open the passenger door, remove the side dash pannel and you will see a hole blocked with yellow insulation material, get a big screw driver and poke through it - you now have acess from cab to engine bay - install cable


Step 3
wiring, soldering and crimping


Basic wiring concepts
1. the key interrupts the 12v coming from the winch controller b4 it gets to a) the in cab switch b) the wireless remote and c) the standard smittyX wired remote control


2. The little switch (i off ii) is connected to both relays (i) to relay 1 and (ii) to relay 2 - 12v positive in ---- the negative in is connected to the Jeeps earth - when the switch (i) is pressed the relay (1) is activated the same goes for switch (ii) and relay 2 - --- because the relays provide a N/C output (N/C stands for normally closed - relay output is on even when the relay is not energised) it is possible to wire the incab switch through the relay N/C connection! ---- this will mean that when the switch is pressed (activating the wireless or wired remotes) and the relay is activated the in cab switch will get disconnected. (sorry if I am making no sense - run out of smarta$$ pills - LoL - if anyone can better explain this little relay magic please post up!


3. Connect everything up but keep the main 12v feed (350amp big red cable) to the winch off the battery incase of any D'oH fickle finger of fate actions - test with multi meter to ensure all works as desired.


in conclusion
The Key is the Master switch
the little switch determines which of the 3 input options will go to the winch
Wired remote, wireless remote and in cab switch
It all works well and looks neat and I don't have to worry about blowing up my winch


If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve the system please post up

I noticed that my heap was running on bowing rear springs (Misaligned) caused by lifting the suspension with extended length springs by the moron who regularly drives it! (me)lol


I am loaded to the MAX 40ltr extra fuel + 40ltr extra water roof top tent, cooking gear & fridge, tools hi lift jack, all my work equipment, my lightweight draws NOT !, spares clothes etc!!


I suspected that the springs on full flex where bottoming out possibly worse - pinching and maybe damaging them - ( I need to add appropriate bump stops)


I just recently picked up a huge Swag from TassieJK (Thanx again Mal) which included really nice rubicon express springs and Spring perch realignment brackets and adjustable rear track bar - all of which I installed today!


I am the worlds biggest Idiot!!! - what was I thinking tackling this job in the carpark @ Rundle st Mall (whilst the Mrs shopped).


1. whist Jeep is fully loaded and b4 jacking - attach spring compressors (it just makes it easier to compress them) and compress the cr@p out of them!


2. Remove lower shock mount bolt.


3. Jack up jeep remove tyre.


4. Optional - remove trackbar - i did just to make access easier


5. Remove already compressed spring.


5. If you are smart ( I wasn't lol ) use angle grinder to remove factory perch - if you are a complete moron (yes thats me lol) piddle away at them with a useless hacksaw! for 6 hours - then be so totally buggeredx that driving back to camp is near impossible LoL


6. bolt on new adjustable perches!


7. re install springs - (in may case compress new springs first).


8. put tyre back on


9. drop jack slowly and check the springs have centred perfectly.


10. re attach lower shocky mount bolt and re attach track bar


Enjoy the feeling of your new jeep - and your handiwork or what ever LoL

Went wheelin with the Sydney Jeep Club!
and I'm still cleaning mud out of everything LoL - I even had to clean mud out of my wallet (and it was in my jeans back pocket) at the time of my Humungously stupid decision to follow steve into a big muddy bog hole with only my bar doors to shield me- LoL


Good news - if anyone else is stupid enough to fill their JK with my mud.
1. the carpets all come out very easily you just need to make a 1cm cut in the carpet close to the driver and passenger front outside seat bolt and you can get all the carpets out without having to remove the seats (unlike other 4x4's)
2. There many floor drain holes just pop them out with a screw driver.
don't forget to pop out the bung hole in the area at the back where the Jack is stored and then just hose it all out - oh yeah - if anybody wants to know how to fix a mud clogged seat belt - just PM me

I kept ripping off the rear trackbar mount off the diff so I bought this almighty bracket of death - it will surely outlast civilisation ! - Many experienced welders had a go at bracing it up to no avail!

So I finally got around to buying a decent Sand Flag!


I didnt want to spend the cash! - who does?


Take a look at my first brilliant idea! - I got some electrical conduit........
it stood up nice and straight in my driveway - I thought it was stiff enough! to do the job...... and then when I got out of my heap to take a pic I realised how pathetic my sand flag was!!!! - pic of silver Nissan


I was on stockton beach late one arvo trying rescue a disco with my new and improved fishing rod sand flag (the photo doesnt show the orange triangle i had on top) and nearly got taken out by a Quad bike just b4 sunset - it was very close - the quad bike whilst in the air and about to land after jumping off the top of a steep dune hit my drivers side mirror with its back wheel! - ouch! - gratuitous photo of wife and kids b4 they all had growth spurts - all my 4 kids look down on the Mrs now LoL pic of white Nissan.


So I bought the ridgy didge lightning stick from TJM Parramatta hooked it up to my parking lights and now when im on the dunes at night you can see me coming for miles


I highly recommend a lit sand flag - not an extravagance or luxury but a must have safety item

I had a great time wheelin out a Wheeny Creek!
Just put up these pix to show some Flex - I just Love the JK!


The Mrs & I went with a mate & his Mrs - 2 Jeeps, Mine a JK on bald MTZ's 33's and his a TJ on new 33' muddy Maxxis with 2' more lift than my JK.


Things were pretty even all day until we hit up some steep steps and to the surprise of us all the JK made the climb and the TJ no matter how hard he tried was unable to get up (OK I admit it - I enjoyed it! the JK was a better heap!- LMAO)

most recently with a wired HDH system now - I also used the arb double rocker double light up dual momentary switch (winch in , winch out) for a while


Note the new A pillar - it contains my oil gauge and aeroforce


I like the wired HDH system really makes it easy to keep things neat and tidy and all together
see pix below -its still a work in progress - nearly finished - will post up soon

Finally!
My view (skyline) out of the front windscreen of my heap has changed for the better - its now a lot less cluttered!!!.
It was a custom order - I bought back in January - was beginning to wonder if it was going to ever arrive - I ordered Red display and black bezel / surround - to match my red / Blk Jeep!
Hello new Aeroforce Gauge!


I changed for several reasons
1. way more functions on the Aeroforce!
2. there was no really good place for the scan gauge - i tried it on the steering column and on the dash in several places.
3. the Aeroforce gauge fits nicely into my A pillar gauge pod - sweet!


I will write it up in more detail after I have had chance to evaluate it

Wired HDH Switch install


I bought the Wired HDH's to solve my switch needs - it will operate 8 devices;


The stupid daystar rockers were for me, a complete fail ! - every time I changed gear (1st,3rd or 5th) the switches would be activated by the gearstick:mad:


as any JKer knows there really isnt a lot a switch available real estate so the WiredHDH will be very popular amoungst Jeepers


I wanted to control;


Front Locker
Rear Locker
ARB Compressor
Winch Master isolate
Winch bar spotties
Roof bar spotties
Rock lights
Rear spottie / work light


The System comes with a thin membrane type switch panel, a small ribbon cable and a black box for all the connections. also comes with cable + connectors and circuit breaker.


There are solid state connections for the 8 outputs, these are rated @ 2.5amps each and are continuously monitored by the cpu and if overloaded will cut out, they will cut straight back in when the current returns to <2.5a or the problem / short circuit is fixed!


There are connections for 12v+ 12v- permanent feed from battery - circuit breaker included
and a connection for 12v in feed from acc position on ignition key.


All 8 outputs can be programmed to be ACCessory dependent or ACCessory independent.
All 8 switches can be programmed to be on/off or momentary.


The Wired HDH system continually monitors batt voltage and will shut off Accessories (all 8 outputs) when the voltage drops to <11.5v


Armed with a bottle of Sm@rt@ss pills I began to plan the install!
I decided that I did not require the ACC interlock option because I wanted to be able to use any of the 8 outputs independent of the Jeeps ignition.


Thats when the smart @ss pills kicked in -LoL
In my previous installation I wired my winch master power relay through a simple key switch - I did this because I did not want anybody using my winch without my permission'


(I was mainly thinking of my L & P plate kids, stupid mates and all the urban myths that tell of landcruisers having there winches hotwired and connected over the roof to the towbar and left by hoodlums to eventually fold in half).


Then I realised that if a mechanic, parking Valet, dum@ss mates or kids were driving my Jeep that I did not want them using any of my 8 accessories either - especially the lockers!!!


so I wired the ACCessory 12v input to permanent 12v+ supply via my key switch and programmed all 8 accessories to be Accessory 12v input dependant! - Yes! SM@RT @ss pills at work!


So when I turn off the Key switch all 8 outputs are disabled! -
I still retain the ability to re program the HDH (very simple button push sequence) so any or all 8 outputs effectively bypass the key switch lockout!


One of my next projects is to install a dual battery system but until I get it installed I can count on my new Wired HDH switch controller to kill my winch master relay at 11.5v thus saving my entire electrical system and Battery!


"Brilliant" thats all I have to say to the WiredHDH company!

Just thought I would post up a little How to;


Install Rear JKS Acos adjustable height spring spacers and front rubber spring spacers and new heavy duty springs


I drive a 2dr JK and pack a lot stuff into it, the 4inch lift springs that I installed over 2yrs ago have sagged to possibly less lift than a std 2" lift - Im sure it had nothing to do with my Mack truck bull bar & winch or the 200kg of equipment, drawers, bars,rooftop tent I often drive around with LoL


I have been playing around with my springs now for nearly 6 months,
I have tried various Heavy duty & std duty springs and have decided that the Rubicon Express 4" springs suit me and my driving style pretty well!


I bought some spring compressors to make the job easier and have used them several times now on my Jeep and also several times on friends rigs whilst out on the trails wheelin to repair / replace adventurous springs LoL I don't enjoy using them - I find them spring compressors a PITA - however they do make the job possible just parked in a driveway (not on a hoist)


I do all my work myself and usually I do it in my driveway (as I dont have a garage or hoist) - so this write up assumes you don't have access to a hoist either.


Because I find the spring compressors to be a PITA I decided this time to try and change the springs without using them! (Famous last words) so I swallowed another fistful of sm@rt@ss pills and began by placing my JEEP IN LOW 4 IST GEAR and chocking the wheels,


I always take off my doors when jacking with my high lift jack just in case the jack slips, as I don't want to scratch or ding my doors.


I decided to change the passenger side first as from experience I knew that its the easiest side.


Firstly I disconnected the front and rear sway bar then I unbolted the rear lower shock bolts and free'd up some more slack in all the brake lines- this gave me the ability to jack up my Jeep so far that the springs could just fall out - and thankfully fall out they did, thus saving me the PITA spring compressors! YAY!


I drilled several holes into the rear top spring mounts to bolt the Acos spacers into, bolted them up and installed my new springs.


Then I went to the front and carefully slid the rubber spring spacers up the bump stop shaft and installed my new springs.


Jacked my Jeep back down and adjusted my rear track bar to centre the body over the wheels.


I am very happy with the result, my Jeep looks a little tougher now LoL - I will post up early next week to report how it drives both on road and Off road wheelin.


Things to keep in mind;
Jacking safety - don't get under your Jeep unless you have solid jack stands.


When Jacking it up to crazy height, as I did to ensure the springs just fell out, continuously check to ensure you don't stretch or damage your ABS wiring!


When drilling holes for the Acos spring spacers be careful!!!! - there are wires running over the top of the rear spring mounts which you could easily drill into!


When setting the ACOS spring spacers remember the drivers side is where you sit and also is the same side the fuel tank is on - so I gave a little more lift on the DS.


The whole task took me 2.5 hours - you could do it heaps faster if A. you have a friend help you and B. you don't stuff around scratching you noodle LoL

I have been driving on near racing slicks for some time now and finally (thanx to selling my caravan on the weekend) was able to get some new treads.


Dilema; I really wanted to go up to 35's, after all I am geared for it 4.56's but to go back up to 35's would require the modification of my front bar / airtank and would negate my engineers certificate, which I am very very happy to have! infact as I drive past mobile speed cameras and random breast testing units I sit smug in my drivers chair! - smug feels good! - yes I know they can still get me if they want to (a mate of mine is a highway patrol cop and he jokingly told me that he could defect a brand new STD commodore if he wanted to) but I still like to feel smug! LoL.


As some of you know I have been asking for advice re which tyre has the best tread pattern and tyre wear prognosis and in the end I took Geoff aka Miraz' advice and went with the KM2's


My heap is approx 2meters wide and is normally a pita to get on a hoist or lifter, Its too wide and the wheelbase is often too short, and their lifters normally wont at full stretch get the wheels in the air, I told the guys at the tyre centre that it was high and wide and probably wouldnt fit their lifter but they didnt get it! so 4 guyz and 15 min later it fall off their lifter and they still hadn't gotten in the air (LOL). One of the wise tyre monkeys decided to lift it with a trolley jack in the centre of the diffs, which normally I would object to because as my fellow JKers will know - our diffs are made of cheese, anyway I was now running late so I just held my tongue and cheered as they finally got it in the air!


I asked the guyz for my old tyres as 2 of them are still legal and 2 will do incase of "Cape trip emergency" - the guyz laughed at me; "you will never get 4 tyres in that little Jeep" - I said "really" as I drove off with them LoL

!00,000km on the clock now - still absolutely love it!
replaced;
rear disc pads - fronts still better than 50%.
clutch - old one was still good - pressure plate was perhaps getting weak?
balljoints - drivers side top was stuffed - replaced all 4 to be sure!


under warranty;
clock spring.
oil pump - 2 new engines thanx to NO Oil pressure.
power steering pump.


Had a few leaks with the soft top,
Got a degree in JK DW and related suspension mods.


I have wheeled it almost every weekend on some pretty tough tracks!


It is my daily drive and I use it to get to and film in remote ares of OZ.


I tow boats, bikes, cars & caravans with it - great tow vehicle.


I get crap economy now thanx to my dumbass decision to gear it wrong - it came with 3.21's and I changed it to - 4.56's on 33's - I geared it for 35's but seen as i cant get it engineered on 35's - 33's will do fine, I get good crawling speed so 15l/100km I will put up with.


The Jeep is great to drive and very capable off road.


If the engine should falter even a tiny little incy wincy bit - Ill shoot it and replace it with a V8

I got to keep my factory tow bar as well.
It is pre drilled and threaded for a tyre carrier and best of all IT IS TOUGH!
I love the shape and the hummer looking tow points
It is extremely well manufactured and perfectly finished!

Hi Guyz
I have been slowly over the past 3 years beating up on my plastic fantastic fenders, almost everytime I go wheelin I rip & crunch & brake those little clips that hold em on.


My drivers side rear fender has been just hanging on with 3 or 4 out of 15 clips now for over a year and on the weekend I let my "L" Plater son do some of the wheelin and between him & I we finally tore it totally off.


I went to buy some of these little clips from my local Chrysler blokes and too my (and the spare parts guyz) utter dismay discovered that the list price on these little plastic clips is $11.78ea - I asked for 20 of them (before he figured out the price) as I wanted to replace all of them on the drivers rear and have a few spares that I could keep in my trail repair kit. Do the math for 20 clips;
$235.60c - There is now way in hell that I will pay that for what amounts to a simple bumper clip.


I walked across the road to Pacific spares (like repco) and asked if they stocked bumper clips - they did and I bought 18 for $4.75 tot saving = $230.85


I simply clipped them into my fender - had to do a bit of Mcgyvering lol - which amounted to placing a small piece of gaffa / 100mph tape to hold them exactly in place as I reinstalled the fender, I realise that so many of you could figure out far better ways to reinstall the fender but I am lazy and needed my heap back on the road ASAP as its my daily drive. it took me less than 2 min to bodge them back on and only $4.75 they feel like they are on solidly and have survived some pretty full on wheelin already - I hope this bodggy is useful Jeepers!

Hi Guyz
I was out wheeling last weekend in the Watto's, B+ grade trails in low range 1st, scrambling up a fairly steep hill and heard a very soft metallic sounding tick / crack,
so I immediately switched off the engine and did some investigating, pulled & pushed just about everything - nothing found, so I decided to drive on carefully and get off the trails and go home!


Returned to 2wd and the faint clicking went away, OK that tells me the problem is in the front end, so I upon investigation i discovered some damage to the drivers front UNI joint, so before I fixed it I gaffed my iphone4 to my bull bar and made the video below, Hopefully if you watch the vid and commit the sound to memory when you hear it on your Jeep (and you will eventually - its not if - its when) you will be able to quickly recognise it and switch to 2wd before you damage the uni ears, my repair cost me a uni joint and my time. I have seen several other JK'ers ignore the warning signs and then have to replace hubs & axels - a lot more expensive than a Uni Joint.

Heres how I replaced my front uni
Take 1
Started with a handful of smart@ss pills and decided that I could change it without removing the front wheel, disc brakes or hub, see pix below. Those of you with an ounce of mechanical expertise or have replaced a JK uni before - feel free to start laughing Now. Anyway 3 hours later 2 broken screwdrivers and a broken jimmy bar all I had managed to do was to remove the circlips!


Take 2 LoL
1. Jack up Jeep, chock wheels, insert jackstand, take off front wheel and slide it under the jeep as extra safety should the jack stand fail
2. Remove the 2 bolts that secure the brake callipers, remove callipers and secure them out of the way.
3. Remove the 3 unusually shaped bolts that secure the hub to the Knuckle
4. Very carefully remove the hex head bolt that secures the ABS / TC/ ESP sensor - its plastic so be very careful and unclip it from the 2 guides and secure it in a safe place.
5. Carefully pry off the hub from the knuckle and slide out the hub, uni and axel.
6. Optional - I removed the drag link to give me better access - probably wasted my time - D'oh - still feeling dumb from my first attempt LoL
7 Place in a vice or similar and remove all 4 circlips then wearing suitable eye protection get an old useless socket and place it on the end cap of any of the unijoint end caps and beat on it neanderthal style hard until you pop the opposite end cap out. repeat 3 more times until all 4 end caps have been whacked out!
8. inspect all 4 ears for wear / damage and in my case burs - lightly sand with fine paper to clean out any surface blemishes and lubricate with a few drops of oil
9 unpack new uni joint and extremely carefully remove all 4 end caps DO NOT DISTURB the needle bearings! . place the uni joint into the axel end first and insert 1st endocarp - gently tap it in place with a hammer - install the next end cap bearing - invert and gently tap in opposite end end cap bearing. I tried to use a G clamp - dumb idea - my mechanic told me just to tap them in gently and in the end that worked out to be the best solution.
10. install circlips - word of caution my circlips were to fat to insert so I put them on a diet (thicknesser) and reduced them to half their original thickness before inserting.
11. repeat process above for hub
12. reassemble - basically steps 1 to 5 in reverse LoL

Funny Story; well I wore out a front drivers side UNI (see my dumb@ss yet successful attemp to repair - earlier post) and after I replaced it I went out for a test drive on the grass field behind my office, as I was "testing" aka performing the technical manoeuvre know as grass D'ohnuts when I heard a new noise - sounded like a dead / dying CV. sure enough I had just killed my front driveshaft CV at the transfer case.


After much research I decided to replace my factory shaft with a Double Cardan from Wooders Garage, much stronger and should last more Km's.


Thankfully the old shaft gave me plenty of notice! - infact I went wheelin several times with it complaining whilst I waited for the replacement to arrive.


Replacing the front shaft is a pretty easy / straight forward job.


To make the repair you will need;
1 x small socket to remove the million little bolts that hold the CV to the transfercase adapter
1 x Large Socket to remove the M22 nut in the centre of the flange / adapter see pic


My 2 cents / hopefully helpful advice.
Firstly you will need to remove the bash plate, I did this repair as I do everything, (without a hoist in the driveway) I removed 3 of the 4 bolts that hold it in place then grabed a handful of smart@ss pills, and just loosened the 4th bolt enough to swivel the bash plate out of the way - I did this because I did not want to have to lift it back in place.


Disconnect / Drop the front driveshaft uni first by removing the 4 bolts then put your transfer case in neutral - this will allow you to remove one of the millions of little bolts before you rotate the shaft to remove the next little bolt and so on until they are all out


When removing the centre nut from the adapter flange put the transfer case back into 4L so you can swing on it to loosen it and get it off.


When swapping out flanges be sure to carefully remove the fat little rubber Oring / seal and carefully install it into your new flange - As a total dumb@ss I missed this important step , and as I was packing away all my tools and feeling well pleased with my efforts I noticed the "stupid" little Oring was still embedded in my old flange D'oh, so back on the jack stands, remove the bash plate remove front uni.........blah blah blah....... dumb@ss LoL


If you have any mechanical aptitude you should be able to do the job in around 90min's (unlike me who took a little bit longer, ok a lot longer - LoL)

Ive been using my aeroforce gauge now for 6 months and am very happy with it


The Aeroforce gauge can be setup to show two things at once or cycle through as many as you like - I mainly use it to monitor battery voltage and water temperature on road and for off road I have it cycling through a bunch more;


When im in the slop I select water temperature and steering angle
water temp so I can see if i have clogged up the radiator with mud as the std JK gauge will show "12oclock" all is well for any temperature between 85 and 112 degrees C


and steering angle so i know when I have the wheels pointing straight as those of you who wheel in the mud will know - sometimes you can have the wheel 1 complete turn from straight and have almost NO idea!


When winching I use the aeroforce gauge to bump up the idle - you can input what ever RPM you want - I usually input 1850 which is a apparently the rpm needed to get maximum output from the alternator.


You can program your Jeep for different gears and different tyre size to correct you car computer and speedo readings.


Reading and clearing DTC - fault codes


Another awesome feature is - the aeroforce gauge has 2 annalog inputs that you can connect whatever you want to - I am planning to install a long range fuel tank and will connect the sender up to the 1st of the 2 annalog inputs - i have done some research and have determined that the gauge will display anything - 0 - 5v. - I may have to consult with the guru's Mightymouse and Nemesis but I feel positive that I will be able to make it work eventually.


it is brilliant, I still have my scan gauge but now it lives in my tool box and comes out only when I want to assist my friends in diagnosing their Heaps.


There are 2 super bright Led's that can be configured to light up in any condition or combination of conditions - I have mine set to light up on high temperature (over 100 degrees C) and / or high RPM.

its my best mod ever - it shuts up the stupid door open chime




What the hell were Chrysler thinking!!! - who on earth wants to listen to that annoying chime just because they have opened their drivers door!


This mod will give you a switch to decide if you want your Jeep JK factory or quiet!


The only downside to this mod is - if you silence the chime you also disable the interior light sensor -(only on the drivers side) the light will still come on from the light control on the steering column and the passenger door!


What you need
1. Scotch Lock 25c
2. Red switch - Jaycar $2.95c
3. small piece of wire and some electrical tape.
4. Peace and Quiet - priceless!


Tools
1. philips head screw driver for the 4 screws in the door
2. allen Key for the hex head inside the door release
3. wire stripper and Soldering iron / solder


Step 1
Remove inside door skin - remove 4 screws and 1 hex head bolt
gently pry off the trim starting from the bottom of the door - just pull and you will hear the plastic locks popping of 1 at a time - go slow and and after you have released the bottom of the skin lift the door skin up to clear the bottom of the window lip - carefully remove the plug to the central locking switch.


Step 2
cut the purple wire - sorry the photo is little blurred


Step 3
drill hole for switch - any where you like! - theres plenty of options re space for a switch!


Step 4
insert and wire up switch to purple wire.


Step 5
replace door trim.




Step 6
Brag to your friends that you can open your drivers door and not have to put up with the endless annoying chime and the stereo stays on

Of all the Dumb@ss things I have done to 4x4's over the years this mod is my most embarrassing and most shockingly dangerous ergo the WARNING;


Do NOT install disconnects as per the following pictures as you run the serious risk of entering yourself for your very own Darwin Award!


When new the lower section of the fixed part of the (Dumb@ss) disconnect will remain vertical when disconnected, however as the wheelin miles start to add up it will get progressively looser until it will fall forward under braking and totally block your steering!!! - God help you if you are on the black stuff @ 80kph heading to the servo to air up when it it falls forward!


Solution - JKS disconnects, I got mine from "Wooders" for less than I could get them off EBay USA


Install tip - when tightening the centre lock nut wedge something (I used my little shifter) between the bottom disco and the Jeep to ensure it stays nicely in line with the top.

heres why i say its good on a JK;
1. I needed extra coverage to be legal and it does that.
2. When I first did it there was little else available for a jk.
3. Some of the awesome new products available for the JK arnt LoL - ive got mates who have dropped big bux on "Awesome new products" and have broken them on the first occasion they slide into a high sidded rut
4. I have squashed crunched slid on rubbed and bangged my flares so many times I cant count - there still there
5. my heap looks mild not wild with the factory flares and rubber ext and i like that because it doesnt scream out to the boyz in blue look how high im lifted!
6. its cheap!
7. Im waiting to see what will be the best aftermarket alternative and then Ill buy that - and im still waiting

I use VMS - GPS mapping


its not free but it is worth every cent.


You can purchase extremely detailed maps for specific areas - I have bought all the maps for the areas I usually wheel in.


I love the large HD display and tactile / intuitive response from the touch screen.


I have also added a ton of free apps to make driving fun from pitch & tilt meters to apps that can find the nearest Petrol station or Pizza joint.


I surf the net on it and get my email - I guarantee you will enjoy it


Lastly - I am still trialing it in various places in my JK and think that my next install will be above the centre mirror

I am preping my Jeep for multiple water crossings (Cape Trip soon) and have appreciated everyones advice re deep water and the unsealed JK fan, and today at the 4x4 show Eastern creek I grabbed a bargain - actually it was a present from my beautiful wife - a MSA car bra.


My 2c
1. What a well designed and well manufactured product.
2. Great material - thick, strong and supple.
3. Great shape - corners folded around perfectly.
4. Plenty of attachment options inc quick release buckles.
5. Loads of Elastic and bungy cords to really customise the final fit.
6. Handy pocket in the front to store your wed muddy snatch strap.
7. Strategically sewn in water release fly's to allow quick drainage when you get out of the water.


and to think that I was just going to buy a $20 blue tarp! - the MSA Bra is a superbly designed high quality product that I am sure I will use for years and years, a great man once said ("Molly") do yourself a favour and get 1.

I just bought a 4 channel remote switch from Ebay (China)
pretty cool piece of kit for $13.00


2 remote fobs with 4 buttons ea
1 Master control unit


The Master control unit contains 4 relays NC, NO & C


It can be programmed as momentary, self lock, and latch


I programmed mine = 1 push on - 1 push off. I think that is latch mode?


I used channel 1 for my Jeep rear storage area - where the seats used to be
Channel 2 draws light
Channel 3 Roof top tent
Channel 4 lighting under my roll out awning




I also upgraded my 1500w / 3000w inverter to a 2500w / 5000w and my second batteryfrom 40amps to 105amps, i added a charger so I can top up at caravan parks etc and a volt meter to keep an eye on the state of charge etc.


Lastly I added some really bright led lights , I still need to paint them black
but WoW they are super bright!

More prep for the Sydney Jeep Club trip to the Cape.


My Jeep JK will have 2 occupants - Jax (My beautiful wife) and myself!
I need to carry at least 20L of reserve water for cooking and drinking etc aside from my main 20L of drinking water and the 2X 1.5L bottles in the front of the cab to drink on route.


I am looking for advice / comment re my plans to put 25L on the roof bars


My Plan so far is to put 3meters of 100mm pipe (+ threaded end cap) up on my roof bars with a locking tap on the back end and a manually openable valve at the top on the front (to let the air out when I fill up) I expect to get approx 25 Litres of storage.


I realise I am adding another 25+Kg's to the top of my Jeep and that when the tank is half full I will have 12+kgs of "slide Hammer" LoL


Q. Has anyone got any recommendations / cautions / advice before I fab up some brackets & weld em on?

the passenger side of my Jeep is already carrying the awning so balance wise Im pretty close


I like the idea of getting rid of the water hammer and in case of Catastrophic failure I will still have 20L inside the jeep!

In prep for the soon (yes I'm getting excited) trip to the Cape I decided that I needed to sure up the JK Achilles heel ........ the front track bar mounts LoL


I don't want to be tightening up my trackbar / panhard bolts every 500km (my interval guess based on the corrugations in the OTR) so I have;


1. Changed the stupid Chrysler threaded bolts for slightly larger shanked 9/16th bolts - the threaded chrysler bolts have a tendency to file away at the holes until they get sloppy and ultimately Death wobble will ensue.


2. Cut out some 8mm thick plates from Stainless steel and drilled them with a hole exactly 9/16th...... welded them on both sides of the 2 mounts and then spent way too long trying to get the bolts and track bar back on my Jeep . hammering, bashing and much swearing LoL


My front end is now tighter than ......... hmmm..... its ever been. LoL

I used stainless steel in the hope that it will not easily get flogged out and I assume that the high tensile bolts will wear before the stainless steel plates wear! - they should be easier to replace.

Hi Hunty
I noticed you removed the rear seat in favour of a storage fit out.
I have done the same and used the narrow space behind the front seats to install an upright flat 50ltr Boab water tank, it sits between the two axles middle of the Jeep and low so there's no impact on the centre of gravity, very handy and the water always seem to be cool. you can use it gravity fed with a hose or put a pump and taps outside the Jeep.
There are a few photos on my profile's photo album of the install.
Cost about $200 and comes from Boab in WA I think Opposite Lock has them (although I wouldn't use them).
Also because its flat and tapers from the bottom up there's not (much) water hammer.
Hope this helps.

I've drowned my Jeep many times in slop, mud, rivers and the Jardine,
its been around OZ twice and crossed the centre both ways.


I drove onto the Wisemans ferry and turned off my Jeep - got to the other side and tried to restart it, not even an audible click D'oh cars piled up behind me full ferry and cues 2 hrs long to cross...... PITA, foolishly I opened the drives door and gave a big fred flintstone push, thankfully it was just enough to roll start and I got to drive off the ferry very relieved to not be blocking hours of post holiday traffic.


I got home and decided to fault find the problem


1. Crawled under with a large screw driver and shorted out the two +12v poles on the solenoid and it started perfectly (had it in low range Neutral to inhibit the clutch lock out).


2. being a Jeep magyvering genius I decided the solenoid was stuffed.


3. went to jeep and asked how much for a new solenoid and was told $385bux - ouch! ebay says less than $100.


4. I decided to buy a generic solenoid and mount it higher up near the battery out of harms way - hopefully above the high water mark LoL


5. Just for laughs I asked the Jeep parts parts guy "how much for the starter and solenoid combined and too my amazement he said $210 - which is less than just the solenoid WTFudge????


5. Bought a new starter solenoid combo and installed it


6. Very easy job - firstly disconnect the battery!
there are only 2 bolts holding the starter to the block and they are pretty easy to get to if you have a socket set with wobbly / uni joint. unplug the solenoid and bolt off the 12+ cable.


7. Excited I jumped out from under my Jeep - reconnected the battery and jumped in turned the key and NOTHING.


8. Too many smartass piles consumed - I failed to check all the simple things first and learnt a humbling lesson D'oh - I also did not expect the solenoid to be fed through a fuse or it to be blown.... blah blah blah sucked in to me! hopefully this little write up will save you :)


9. went to my local speed shop and bought 2x 40A fuses installed on and put a spare in my tool kit.


10. Starts very well now :) and I have a perfectly good starter motor in my garage LoL

Ive been playing with this for a couple of years now and finally made a vid


Springs have given me the ships for years - to hard to soft to tall to low - squashed with load.......... Cops see you up too high and Whammy go to low and get stuck at the Mall LoL


I installed some second hand air bags and made my own controller system with manual valves - couldn't afford a proper system at first, then eventually I bought the air ride controller with 4 individual height sensors - proper build pix to follow soon - and the iPhone app


It has been fantastic - i am able to drop down onto the bump stops at will and make it into a 1.8m carpark I can crank it up for stump jumping LoL


Best of all is the ability to;


1. drop the front for climbing steep hills
2. drop the rear for descending steep hills
3. drop either side depending on which way the pucker factor is LoL
4. drop down under trailers -hook em on and picked up
5.ability to raise the front and drop the rear when towing a car trailer and put the rear of the car trailer up very high to reverse into steep driveway
6. raise the rear to max and drop the front to put the rear of a car trailer on the ground - no ramps required


drive around the city looking somewhat normal


I DO NOT recommend any JKers doing this - I luv it but i have invested 100's of hours

ps here are another 7 reasons I luv em
1. Smooth quiet ride
2. I let a little bit of air out on the freeway and get a magic carpet ride.
3. Smoothest JK I have ever been in
4. when I get into 2.1m or lower carparks and park - if there is room I raise it up to full height and then disable the system - good luck theives getting it out of the Carpark LoL.
5. I also put it up to full height sometimes when i park in questionable areas - its so high thieves can't look in the windows LoL
6. when I'm parked at the lights and a big cruiser or pootrol pulls up next to me and looks down like "ha ha little Jeep - I wait till they turn their head and hit full up - when they look back they are like WTF as i look down on them LoL
7. When I need to work under the Jeep - Happy days - full up

Hmmm - had the Jeep so long (7yrs ish) i am now redoing mods LoL

I am very blessed, for my recent birthday my favourite brother Phil spoiled me with a new CB for my Jeep. My old CB was very good (or so i thought) but this new 80ch CB is the Bomb! makes my old one seem primitive LoL

Still gotta finish hiding some wires but overall very happy - I am also especially happy that many years ago i took the opportunity to buy an uncut dash top panel -came in very handy today :)

The popo in NSW have apparently been told to roger as many motorists as possible LoL - 2 of my friends have recently been booked for number plate too high. my mates caravan has the plate in the factory position and has so for the last 5 yrs, yet he just got $450bux and 3 points - if you download the number plate spec from the rta website there is no mention of legal height - anyway apparently it is 1300mm from the ground - so I have changed my mount.
My good friend and Jeep legend David Woodly designed and engineered this for me, and unlike some of the currently available ones it does not rattle :) the base is a recycled coil spring bucket from a TJ.

In 24hrs over 7100 people have watched it and it has had over 230 shares on different Facebook pages and around 19500 people have seen the post, not bad when we have around 1800 followers on Facebook. It's doing better than jeeps latest video on their Facebook site. It is a bit of fun and being very well recieved and taken light heartedly :) We couldn't have asked for a better response.
