Time has come that i make some side steps for the XJ.

They started out looking like this:

i didnt like them the frame was to heavy!!!

So i started again! whats the best way i attach them to the mono chassi?

Most designs I see utilise square/retangular mounting 'feet' and they're simply screwed to the frame rails with large sheet metal screws.

The more experienced fabricators (ie any fabrication experience :D) here may have a better method.

Steve F built his own for his XJ - i'm pretty sure there are photos on AJOR of them in the build process. Or maybe they are on here in his Members Rig thread. Or both.

i still havent finished making the frame. will be putting 2x legs with plates so that they can bolt on to the chassi/frame and on to the lift spring brackets. what size plates and thickness should i use?

The pinchweld seam takes most of the weight on sliders, it's the fold near the sills in the body. I ran steel along this and put 5 hi tensile bolts through it, this is close to the slider. I then ran two legs back to the main frame and bolted straight through it with a sleeve to stop it crushing (also get lots of paint in there).

Here's a couple of pics which might help.

You can see the dirt strip of metal that bolts to the pinch seam, you could do that or tap the main box section and bolt into that. Either way mine have been on for a few years and taken a beating with no issues :)

The legs going back to the frame just stop the sliders pivoting around the pinch seam.

I took most of the pics out of those as they showed my number plate and it was around the time someone got handed over to the RTA by someone else on AusJeep. Anyway, hopefully there's still enough detail without them :(

Steve, does your pinchweld seam run flush from front to back or does it taiper in at the back? on my xj it taipers in under the back door about 10mm difference?

Anyway ill work it out, thanx again Steve, gives me a good idea on how to finish the side steps. ill post more pics up when i finish.

It tapers in, I tacked the sliders together with them help in position with clamps etc to account for the taper.

finished tonite welding the 4 x legs, ( cut too size & welded plats on them!) 2 x for each rock rail!

I used Black Epoxy Gloss Enamel Paint, this will help with future rust on the frame and welds, no i didnt use stainless steel welding rods :'( next project i will.
